For physicians, this isn’t some distant policy debate; it’s a daily reality in the exam room. They see patients arriving with deeply ingrained beliefs stemming from unverified social media posts, content amplified by algorithms, and AI-generated advice that can be dangerously inaccurate. As Jennifer Freeden, Southwest Regional Risk Manager at ProAssurance, points out, “Through various social media platforms—whether it’s Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, or an AI-generated question and answer session—we see a daily, rapid spread of medical misinformation that is truly uncharted and unregulated.” She emphasizes that even if one tried to keep up with and correct all inaccuracies, the sheer volume of content would overwhelm such efforts; it requires dedicated, coordinated action. Beyond the clinical implications, this flood of information also carries serious consequences for risk management, potential lawsuits, and the fundamental trust between doctors and their patients.
To truly grasp the problem, it’s vital to differentiate between medical misinformation and disinformation. Medical misinformation refers to data, images, or statements that are unintentionally inaccurate or misleading and haven’t been properly vetted. It’s often a mistake, a misunderstanding, or simply incomplete information. Medical disinformation, on the other hand, is deliberately false information created with the intent to deceive. Someone knowingly produces and spreads it despite knowing it’s untrue. Both are rapidly spreading and fundamentally altering how patients interact with their doctors. Freeden highlights the real-world impact: “Medical misinformation is relied upon by users every day, and it can cause fear or apprehension, false beliefs, avoidance of doctor’s offices when patients should be going in, overuse of offices by patients who may not really need certain testing or diagnostics, and a general misunderstanding of the health care issue they’re trying to research.” What makes this situation even more insidious is how social media algorithms exacerbate the problem, especially for vulnerable individuals. These algorithms are designed to keep users engaged, often by showing them more of what they’ve already interacted with. As Freeden notes, “One of the saddest parts about the proliferation of medical mis- and disinformation is that the algorithms are set up so those vulnerable users receiving the inaccurate information actually will receive it more frequently. The dangerous cycle perpetuates itself.” A Harris Poll cited by U.S. News and World Report starkly illustrates the superficial engagement many have with online health content: 75% of people who share health and science articles do so based solely on the headline, without actually reading or verifying the content. Meanwhile, social media influencers, often paid to promote products, supplements, or medications, face minimal accountability for making unverified claims, a stark contrast to the stringent ethical and professional standards that govern how doctors provide health information.

A study from the Mesothelioma Center in November 2025 found that when AI suggested reported symptoms were not high risk, users were inclined to skip doctor’s appointments. Conversely, when AI flagged symptoms as high risk—even if they genuinely weren’t—patients often sought unnecessary tests and diagnoses, leading to increased healthcare costs and patient anxiety. These downstream effects are already quite noticeable in clinical practice. Most doctors agree that medical misinformation has significantly worsened since the COVID-19 pandemic, adding considerable time to patient visits. What once might have been a single conversation for informed consent can now stretch into three or four appointments as physicians patiently work to align patients with evidence-based care. And while specific malpractice lawsuits directly linked to misinformation are not yet a common occurrence, the legal landscape is shifting. Emerging cases involving AI chatbots that have led to unsafe interactions, even wrongful death claims in some instances, are a clear signal of what might come. Freeden cautions, “These chatbot cases are not in the medical malpractice space yet, but they certainly could be if a provider’s office or hospital decided to create their own chatbot for clinical or therapeutic types of interactions and we saw the same results.” This means that healthcare providers need to be incredibly careful about how they integrate AI and online information into their patient interactions.
Despite these daunting challenges, doctors aren’t powerless. There are practical steps they can take to manage patients who arrive armed with misinformation, and crucially, these encounters can even be transformed into opportunities for deeper engagement and stronger patient-physician relationships. Freeden encourages patients to “arrive at their doctor’s office with questions, seek second opinions when needed, and serve as their own advocates,” which means medical practices must be ready to handle patients who bring medical misinformation or disinformation to the table. She also offers a silver lining, noting that some physicians observe that patients using AI often come prepared with specific questions relevant to their health and seem more invested in their healthcare outcomes. So, it’s not all bad, but the key is knowing how to effectively manage and work with patients who might hold dangerous beliefs. The core strategy, Freeden explains, is a proactive and empathetic approach grounded in several key principles. The first is to be proactive rather than reactive. Instead of waiting for misinformation to surface in the exam room, practices can preemptively educate patients about the limitations of online health content. This means having open conversations before misinformation takes hold, explaining that much of what’s found online isn’t created by experts or even real people.
Secondly, maintaining patient dignity is absolutely crucial. When a patient presents information that is clearly incorrect or even dangerous, it can be frustrating for a physician. However, doctors who prioritize listening first, taking the time to understand the root of a patient’s beliefs, and then responding with calm, evidence-based education are far more likely to preserve trust and achieve better clinical outcomes. Freeden acknowledges the difficulty: “It can be very difficult at times not to have a condescending or frustrated attitude, especially because our physicians already have such precious little time with their patients.” Yet, it’s precisely in these moments that empathy can make all the difference. Thirdly, medical practices should involve the entire care team in this effort. While institutions like Duke University have launched dedicated programs to address misinformation, most physicians still receive very little formal training on this critical subject. As regulatory frameworks struggle to keep pace with the lightning speed of social media and AI, the heavy lifting increasingly falls on individual practices and their risk management partners to protect both patients and providers from the consequences of a public that is often misinformed. Freeden views this challenge not as a defeat, but as an opportunity: “Medical mis- and disinformation need to be viewed as an opportunity to be prepared for future patients who are going to come in with this same misconception.” It’s an ongoing battle for truth and trust in healthcare, one that requires patience, empathy, and proactive engagement from all sides.
