Bhopal: IIT Kanpur Students Combat Fake News with Empathy-Driven AI Tool
In response to the pervasive issue of misleading health tips circulating on family WhatsApp groups, two students from IIT Kanpur have developed an innovative AI-powered training platform named ‘Bunk with Kindness’. Created by Himanshu Pandey and Hamida Syed, the platform aims to counteract the spread of misinformation on social media by fostering conversations filled with empathy and compassion. Himanshu, originally from Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh, and Hamida from Delhi, shared insights about their platform during a recent visit to Bhopal, highlighting its potential utility in tackling the challenges posed by fake news, particularly in the health sector.
Himanshu emphasizes that merely countering fake news with facts is insufficient. He argues that effective communication involves understanding the emotional state of the individual propagating the misinformation. "Countering fake news requires empathy and a compassionate approach," he asserted. The ‘Bunk with Kindness’ platform aims to engage with individuals in a way that fosters belief in factual information rather than simply presenting them with counterarguments. This empathetic engagement is crucial to persuading those entrenched in misinformation.
The inspiration for ‘Bunk with Kindness’ stemmed from the personal experiences of Himanshu, who became concerned about his family’s susceptibility to misleading health information shared in their family WhatsApp group. He recalled a situation where his parents, both diabetic, were tempted to try new remedies instead of adhering to their prescribed medications, influenced by spurious health tips. Despite his efforts to clarify the facts with references from credible sources like the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), he realized that their approach was not effective. This realization prompted him and Hamida to develop a platform that improves communication strategies for discussing misinformation.
Co-developer Hamida elaborated on how the AI tool operates, describing its functionality that allows users to refine their responses before discussing fake news with relatives or friends. The platform highlights fact-checked health news and serves as a preparatory tool for individuals attempting to share accurate information. Users can access a content repository that organizes data from existing fact-checking efforts, thus empowering them to communicate the truth more effectively. This structured approach not only supports the dissemination of accurate information but also encourages thoughtful conversations regarding the issues at hand.
Additionally, Himanshu pointed out that health-related misinformation poses significant risks, as it often leads individuals to make dangerous choices regarding their well-being. He and Hamida’s initiative stands as a pioneering effort within the rapidly evolving landscape of misinformation, particularly relevant in a time when online communities heavily influence health decisions. The incorporation of empathy in their strategy sets ‘Bunk with Kindness’ apart from other fact-checking tools, offering a compassionate response to those propagating falsehoods.
