To figure out how reliable these AI summaries really are, the researchers used an OpenAI tool called “SimpleQA.” Think of it like a meticulous, digital pop quiz designed specifically for AI, featuring over 4,000 questions to thoroughly check an AI system’s ability to answer correctly. Interestingly, just a couple of years ago, in 2022, the accuracy of Google’s AI search was sitting around 85 percent. That’s not bad, but there’s always room for improvement. The good news is that after Google updated its underlying AI model from Gemini 2.5 to the newer, more advanced version 3.0, the accuracy jumped up to that 91 percent mark we just talked about. It highlights a common challenge in AI development: how do you truly measure something as complex as “understanding” or “accuracy” in a way that satisfies everyone?

The study, despite Google’s criticisms of the testing method, still offered some compelling, real-world examples of where the AI stumbled, showing us that even with 91% accuracy, those 9% can be quite significant. For instance, imagine asking the AI when Bob Marley’s former home became a museum. You’d think that’s a pretty straightforward factual query. The AI diligently went through various websites, trying to piece together the answer. But when it couldn’t find a definitive date, it leaned heavily on Wikipedia. The problem? Wikipedia, being an open-source platform, sometimes contains conflicting information, and in this case, the AI inadvertently picked up and presented the wrong year. One important critique is that the testing model itself might have flaws, potentially adding its own layer of error to the results, which would naturally skew the findings. To complicate matters further, Google clarified in a request from Ars Technica that they actually use different AI models for different search queries. Think of it like having a toolbox with various screwdrivers; you wouldn’t use a flathead for a Phillips head screw. Often, for simpler or less critical queries, they might use “cheaper” or less computationally intensive models. This is a practical approach, but it means that the accuracy could vary widely depending on what you’re asking.
