The United Kingdom remains steadfast in its commitment to media freedom around the world: UK statement at the UN

Let’s break down this statement, bringing it to life in a way that resonates with human experience, focusing on the core issues and the passion behind them, while staying within the word count and paragraph structure.

The Fight for Truth: A Human Imperative in a Tumultuous World

Imagine a world where the very ground beneath your feet, the facts you rely on, felt like they were constantly shifting. This isn’t science fiction; it’s the reality we’re increasingly facing, a reality driven by a relentless surge of misinformation and disinformation. As someone deeply invested in a world where truth and trust prevail, I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the Department of Global Communications on their 80th anniversary. Their work, especially now, feels like a lighthouse in a storm. In an era where global tensions are at a fever pitch, where conflicts rage, the need for facts – for unvarnished truth – has never been more critical. We stand proudly with this department, supporting their absolutely vital mission to keep the United Nations a beacon of trustworthy information, and to fiercely protect the integrity of that information. Think of it like this: if we can’t agree on basic facts, how can we hope to solve the monumental challenges facing humanity? This isn’t just about policies and protocols; it’s about the fundamental ability to understand our world, to make informed decisions for ourselves, our communities, and our planet. This fight for information integrity isn’t some abstract concept; it directly impacts our ability to build a more peaceful, just, and sustainable future.

The alarm bells are ringing, and they’re ringing loudly. We in the United Kingdom are profoundly worried by the sheer speed at which threats to truth are multiplying, supercharged by the rise of artificial intelligence. It’s like a wildfire spreading through our information landscape. For three straight years, the World Economic Forum has highlighted misinformation and disinformation as one of the most serious risks we’ll face in the coming years. This isn’t a slow, passive drift; it’s a deliberate, weaponized assault. We’re seeing state and non-state actors using disinformation and information manipulation as carefully orchestrated campaigns to fan the flames of tension, escalate conflicts, and erode public trust in the very democratic institutions that underpin our societies. They’re actively working to deceive global audiences, pulling the wool over our eyes. Just look at Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine; it’s been accompanied by a relentless campaign of information warfare, spreading lies, twisting facts, and attempting to divert attention from the horrific truth to chip away at global support for Ukraine. We in the UK will not stand idly by. We will continue to unequivocally support Ukraine and actively counter these insidious Russian information operations. In a collaborative effort with our partners, we’ve already sanctioned 40 individuals and entities enabling this Russian information manipulation. It’s also crucial to highlight the disturbing trend of disinformation campaigns targeting UN Peacekeeping operations, designed to discredit the UN and turn local populations against the very “Blue Helmets” who are there to protect them. This is not only dangerous but utterly irresponsible, and every single Member State should condemn it without hesitation. We are incredibly proud to back the United Nations’ “Addressing Mis- and Disinformation and Hate Speech Threats” project, recognizing it as a crucial tool in the fight against disinformation aimed at our brave UN Peacekeepers. This isn’t just about politics; it’s about protecting the very fabric of truth and trust that allows our global society to function.

At the heart of a free and informed society lies independent journalism. The United Kingdom remains absolutely steadfast in its commitment to media freedom across the globe because we understand its profound importance. Independent journalists are not just reporters; they are the guardians of human rights, the watchdogs of democracy, and the brave souls who shine a spotlight on the devastating realities of war, often at immense personal risk. The statistics are horrifying: the Committee to Protect Journalists reports that 2024 and 2025 were the deadliest years on record for journalists and media workers. These dangers are tragically concentrated in conflict zones – Gaza, Lebanon, Ukraine, Sudan – places where the truth is often the first casualty. We in the United Kingdom strongly condemn all violence directed against journalists and media workers. It’s a fundamental principle of international humanitarian law that civilian journalists are protected during armed conflict. We demand that all attacks against media workers be thoroughly investigated and that those responsible are brought to justice, in compliance with both national and international law. As Co-Chair of the Media Freedom Coalition, alongside our partners in Finland, we are committed to actively promoting and protecting strong, independent public interest journalism worldwide. This isn’t just about journalistic freedom; it’s about the public’s right to know, to have access to diverse perspectives, and to hold power accountable. Without them, democracies falter, and injustices thrive in the shadows.

So, this brings me to my final, crucial point. The United Kingdom is utterly dedicated to doing everything in our power to safeguard information integrity globally, and this includes our unwavering support for the Sustainable Development Goals. Think of information as the bedrock upon which all progress is built. Without accurate and reliable information, how can we hope to achieve universal education, eradicate poverty, or tackle climate change? These goals, designed to create a more prosperous and sustainable future for all, hinge on our collective ability to make informed decisions. We will continue to champion multilingualism, recognizing that truth should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their language. We fully support the Global Digital Compact, understanding that digital spaces must be equitable and safe. And we remain committed to our collective efforts to bridge the digital divide, ensuring that when individuals come online, they aren’t bombarded with lies but instead have access to accurate, reliable, and trustworthy information. Our vision is a world where everyone, everywhere, has the tools and the information necessary to participate meaningfully in society, to make their voices heard, and to contribute to a shared future built on facts, understanding, and trust. This isn’t just a policy statement; it’s a belief in the power of truth to transform lives.
