Russia is trying to justify strikes on Kyiv with a wave of fake news

The recent, large-scale Russian aerial assault on Kyiv on the night of June 15 has left not only deep physical scars on the city but has also ignited a secondary, digital battlefront. As the smoke cleared from the wreckage of civilian homes and cultural landmarks, the Kremlin’s propaganda machine immediately shifted into gear, working tirelessly to rewrite the narrative of the night’s carnage. According to the Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD), this is a calculated, repetitive strategy: whenever Russia strikes innocent lives or protected heritage sites, they scramble to frame the violence as a precision hit on “legitimate targets,” or, more maliciously, claim that the damage was somehow self-inflicted by Ukraine itself.

One of the most egregious examples of this gaslighting involves the historic Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, a crown jewel of world culture protected under UNESCO status. Rather than acknowledging the destruction caused by their own Shahed drones—which struck the Assumption Cathedral—pro-Russian information channels have absurdly characterized the damage as a “Ukrainian provocation” or even an act of “self-arson.” By attempting to paint the Ukrainian government as the attackers of their own holiest and most internationally recognized sites, Russian disinformation agents are not just trying to escape accountability; they are trying to fracture the public’s perception of reality, mocking the very essence of Ukrainian heritage in the process.

The scope of this propaganda offensive extends far beyond the Lavra. When Russian munitions tore through the Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Film Studio—a site of deep historical and intellectual value—the response was to label the studio a “hotbed of propaganda,” thereby attempting to justify the destruction of civilian arts and infrastructure under the guise of counter-propaganda efforts. Similarly, wild conspiracy theories have been manufactured regarding an attack on the Supreme Anti-Corruption Court. By creating these false narratives, Moscow signals to its audience that no building in Kyiv is essentially “civilian” anymore, asserting that any structure can be rebranded as a “military facility” the moment a Russian missile strikes it.

The Kremlin’s strategy relies heavily on a tired, predictable playbook: the false flag accusation. By consistently claiming that Ukrainian air defense systems are responsible for the damage to residential buildings, the Russian government hopes to absolve its military commanders of the horrific human toll their aggression imposes. This narrative is meant to induce doubt and confusion, forcing the public to ignore the fundamental truth of the situation—that these homes, courts, and cultural centers were quiet and peaceful before Russian ballistic missiles and drones violated the night sky. The disinformation campaign serves as a shroud, intended to hide the stain of civilian casualties behind a wall of bureaucratic lies.

The true human cost of this disinformation is underscored by the tragic reality of that night. While propagandists were busy typing excuses, four people were killed and at least 23 were injured in Kyiv, including a small child who will now carry the trauma of this attack for the rest of their life. These are not statistics or “provocations”; they are fathers, mothers, and children whose lives were shattered while they slept. The propaganda does not just insult the intelligence of the international community; it insults the memory of the victims, stripping them of their humanity by reducing their deaths to mere collateral damage in an orchestrated information war.

Ultimately, these disinformation waves confirm a grim truth: Russia’s war on Ukraine is as much about psychological warfare as it is about physical destruction. The Kremlin is not only trying to bring down buildings; they are trying to bring down the truth, hoping to convince the world—or perhaps its own citizens—that the responsibility for the fire, the rubble, and the loss of life lies with those being attacked. As the final assessment of the damages continues, the CCD’s warning remains clear. We must remain vigilant, recognizing that for every missile dropped, there is a coordinated effort to drop a lie, with the hope that the truth will be buried beneath the wreckage along with the victims.
