He is an extraordinarily realistic AI creation, complete with subtle imperfections that only careful examination reveals. Such characters humanize what might otherwise be an abstract political cause, making it more relatable and emotionally compelling to potential supporters. They can be tailored to deliver specific messages to particular audiences, adjusting tone and content as needed. They eliminate the personal risk that real fighters would face by appearing publicly, and they can be deployed continuously without fatigue or fear. The study’s authors note that this approach reflects a sophisticated understanding of modern communication dynamics, where authenticity and emotional resonance often trump factual accuracy.

Following the fierce fighting in Kidal on April 25, Russian operatives deployed deepfakes and coordinated campaigns to present Africa Corps in a favorable light and obscure what many observers viewed as a significant defeat.
