As public trust in traditional institutions—like the BBC—hits historic lows, a growing segment of the population is retreating into alternative information ecosystems, often leaving them vulnerable to conspiracies and polarization. Rather than relying on top-down, didactic media literacy campaigns that many already ignore or distrust, this project explores a radical alternative: leveraging the immersive power of videogames. By blending the expertise of psychologists, game developers, and social researchers, the initiative seeks to foster “inoculation”—a psychological defense mechanism that prepares players to spot manipulation in real-time, effectively building societal resilience from the ground up.
The urgency of this mission is rooted in the shifting demographics of digital consumption. Gaming is no longer a niche hobby; it is a universal language, with over half of the UK adult population playing regularly. Crucially, the research identifies a paradox: the individuals most prone to believing in global conspiracies are often the same ones who play games daily, particularly among young men aged 18 to 24. While these players are “digitally native,” they are also the most likely to overestimate their ability to identify misinformation. Because they have largely abandoned mainstream news, which they view as corrupt or depressing, they exist outside the reach of traditional educational interventions. Videogames, therefore, provide a unique, non-confrontational bridge to these hard-to-reach audiences, meeting them in the spaces where they already spend their time and attention.
To understand how to bridge this gap, the project team spent significant time listening to the gamers themselves.
