TikTok’s search engine repeatedly delivers misinformation to its majority-young user base, report says

A Troubling Discovery on TikTok’s Search Engine

A recent investigation into the popular social media platform TikTok has uncovered a concerning trend: a significant portion of the video results it serves for searches on major news topics are rife with misinformation. According to a report released by NewsGuard, a journalism and technology tool that monitors online information, nearly 20% of the videos presented to users searching for information on subjects ranging from Covid-19 vaccines to school shootings contained false or misleading claims. The findings are particularly alarming given TikTok’s massive user base, which is predominantly composed of teenagers and young adults who may be more susceptible to accepting information at face value. The report suggests that the platform’s search function is not just failing to filter out falsehoods but is actively promoting them to a vulnerable demographic, often placing them prominently within the first few search results.

To conduct the study, researchers at NewsGuard entered a variety of search terms into both TikTok and Google this month, ranging from specific queries like “mRNA vaccine” and “2022 election” to more overtly controversial ones like “Uvalde tx conspiracy.” They compared the results to see which platform provided more accurate and reliable information. The analysis of 540 TikTok results revealed that 105 videos, or 19.4%, contained false or misleading claims. The researchers noted a stark difference in quality between the two platforms, stating that Google “provided higher-quality and less-polarizing results, with far less misinformation.” This indicates that the problem is not endemic to the entire internet but is a particular issue with how TikTok’s algorithm and search function curate and present information.

Political Falsehoods and Conspiracy Theories

The issue extends beyond just fringe topics, reaching into the very heart of the democratic process. The NewsGuard report found that a search on TikTok for information about politics, including the 2020 presidential election and the January 6, 2021, US Capitol insurrection, frequently brought up content that contained misinformation and references to QAnon conspiracy theories. For example, a search for the question “Was the 2020 election stolen?” yielded six videos containing false claims within the first 20 results. This suggests that the platform is failing to counter false narratives about election integrity, which have been shown to erode public trust in democratic institutions. For a platform used by millions of young people who are just forming their political views, this consistent exposure to conspiracy-laden content is a serious concern, as it can fundamentally shape their understanding of the world and their government.

The problem is not confined to politics. The researchers also discovered that TikTok’s search engine is “consistently feeding millions of young users health misinformation, including some claims that could be dangerous to users’ health.” One particularly alarming example involved searches for herbal abortion methods. A search for “does mugwort induce abortion” returned over a dozen results that advocated for unproven herbal abortion methods. This is a dangerous situation, as such advice can lead to severe health complications for individuals seeking to end a pregnancy without proper medical supervision. While TikTok has recently begun removing abortion-related videos that violate its policy against medical misinformation, the report reveals that a significant amount of harmful and unverified health advice remains easily accessible through the platform’s core search function.

TikTok’s Response and Scrutiny

In response to the NewsGuard report, a TikTok spokesperson defended the platform’s policies, stating that their community guidelines “make clear that we do not allow harmful misinformation, including medical misinformation, and we will remove it from the platform.” They also highlighted their partnerships with “credible voices” and “independent fact-checkers” to enhance the accuracy of content. However, this official statement stands in stark contrast to the findings of the report. While TikTok does remove a massive volume of content—more than 102 million videos in early 2022 for violating its guidelines—NewsGuard’s review found that less than 1% of those videos were removed for violating the company’s “integrity and authenticity” guidelines, which include misinformation. This discrepancy suggests a possible gap between the company’s stated intentions and its actual enforcement, or that the scale of the problem is so vast that current moderation efforts are insufficient to keep pace with the influx of false content.

The release of the NewsGuard report could not have come at a more sensitive time for TikTok, as it coincides with growing bipartisan concern in Washington over the company’s ties to China. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have expressed fears that US user data could find its way to the Chinese government. This anxiety is fueled by a national security law in China that compels companies located there to cooperate with data requests. US officials worry that China could use Americans’ personal information to identify useful potential agents, intelligence targets, or to inform future disinformation campaigns. When pressed on this issue during testimony before the Senate Homeland Security Committee, TikTok’s Chief Operating Officer, Vanessa Pappas, declined to commit to cutting off the flow of US user data to China. Instead, she promised that the outcome of negotiations with the US government “will satisfy all national security concerns,” despite TikTok’s ownership by ByteDance, a company with its founder and offices in China.

A Warning for Young Users

The NewsGuard report has served to amplify these concerns, painting a picture of a platform that is both vulnerable to foreign influence and negligent in its handling of misinformation. The combination of TikTok’s data security issues and its propensity to surface false information creates a troubling narrative. This is not merely a matter of a social media app being used for entertainment; it is a case of a primary news source for millions of young people being compromised on multiple fronts. The report’s founder, Steven Brill, expressed his surprise at the findings, stating, “I was surprised that TikTok is so much worse even than Google and worse, as a general matter as a platform, than Facebook or Twitter when it comes to this stuff.” This comparison highlights that TikTok’s problem is not an industry-wide standard but a particularly acute failure within its own system.

The implications of this research are deeply concerning for parents and educators. TikTok has evolved beyond a platform for dance trends and memes; it is increasingly becoming a primary search engine for a generation that prefers short-form video content over traditional text-based websites. This shift in information consumption habits means that the platform’s algorithms have a profound influence on how young people understand the world. Brill emphasized this point, saying, “We should take this as a warning. If I had kids of TikTok age, I would certainly want to know what they’re using as a search engine.” He expressed that he would be upset if his children were relying too heavily on sources like Wikipedia, but that the situation with TikTok “takes it so many levels further.” The report serves as a stark reminder that in an age of information overload, the tools we use to navigate that information must be held to a higher standard of accuracy and reliability, especially when it comes to protecting the minds of the next generation.
