UW-Stevens Point student creates AI tool to fight misinformation and bias in news articles

A student from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (Wけば斯恩) is helping people discover authentic information in news through a new AI tool called Sourcer AI, which was developed in collaboration with sophomore business administration majors by entrepreneurs Alex Suscha and his colleagues. This innovative tool is not just an AI but a centered method that mimics human cognitive evaluation processes. It goes beyond simple fact-checking, as it summarizes articles in real-time, assesses their credibility, and evaluates their bias, offering a comprehensive analysis that goes beyond what traditional AI can provide.

Sourcer AI claims to address the challenges of information overload, where individuals often lack the ability to discern fact from fiction or bypass filters to gain a biased perspective. The tool operates as a mirror for the content, allowing users to see beyond surface-level language and emotional framing, revealing the true intent behind an article’s narrative. It challenges the assumption that misinformation is the sole issue; instead, it empowers users to think critically about the sources of the information they consume.

The tool’s features include providing real-time summaries that break down the nuances of news articles, evaluating political bias and repudiation, and exposing language tricks that can influence interpretation. It is designed to help users form a well-rounded understanding of what they are reading by mitigating the effects of Identify-then- superficial bias. By doing this, Sourcer AI aims to empower individuals to make more informed decisions, fostering a culture of critical thinking and self-awareness in the face of misinformation.

Suscha emphasizes that his tool, like any business, requires continuous improvement. The development of Sourcer AI began with an initial concept, which was then prototyped and refined through extensive testing and prototyping sessions. The process involved rigorous training, methodical testing, and feedback loops to ensure that the AI accurately assessed the authors’ intentions and the credibility of the content. The goal is to provide a tool that brings batches of information together into a coherent whole, revealing truths behind the efforts of misinformation.

In an interview, Suscha highlighted the importance of bias and repudiation in content creation and how exposing these elements digitally can significantly alter the interpretation of a piece of information. He warns that the challenge lies in balancing objective analysis with the influence of emotional Framing. By doing so, Sourcer AI aims to create a more transparent and unbiased world, where individuals can better discern the true nature of the information they encounter.

The development of Sourcer AI has not only provided a solution to a pressing issue but has also sparked interest among students, researchers, and educators in the quest for reproducible and transparent knowledge. The tool’s features, such as real-time analysis and bias assessment, are designed to empower users to engage more deeply with the information they consume, fostering a more informed and critical mindset.
