Chennai Police Debunk Misinformation Surrounding Anna University Sexual Assault Case

Chennai, January 4, 2025 – The Tamil Nadu Police issued a stern statement today, refuting false information circulating on social media and certain local news outlets concerning the ongoing investigation into the sexual assault of a student at Anna University on December 23, 2024. The police emphasized that the reports alleging the victim had identified specific individuals, that devices containing explicit material were seized, and that suspects from Tiruppur were involved are entirely fabricated and without merit. They unequivocally stated that neither the Special Investigation Team (SIT), comprised entirely of women IPS officers, nor any authorized entity has released any details regarding the investigation’s progress. The police urged the public to rely on official sources for information and cautioned against sharing or propagating unverified claims.

The police statement highlighted the detrimental impact of spreading misinformation, emphasizing that it not only misleads the public but also compromises the integrity of the investigation. Such irresponsible actions, they asserted, could prejudice the fair and impartial handling of a sensitive case like this and inflict significant harm on all parties involved. They specifically cautioned media organizations, individual reporters, and social media influencers against speculating on the investigation’s outcome or publishing unsubstantiated information. The police stressed the importance of allowing the SIT to conduct its work without interference and emphasized their commitment to ensuring a thorough and impartial inquiry.

The sexual assault, which occurred on December 23, 2024, involved a 19-year-old engineering student and her male friend who were attacked on the university campus. According to the victim’s complaint, the assailant violently assaulted her male companion before dragging her into nearby bushes and sexually assaulting her. The assailant also recorded the assault and subsequently used the video to blackmail the victim. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation across Tamil Nadu, with various political parties and student organizations demanding swift justice and enhanced security measures on campus.

Following the incident, the police swiftly apprehended 37-year-old Gnanasekaran, a roadside vendor with a prior criminal record, in connection with the crime. The arrest brought some measure of relief, but the public outcry continues, fueled by concerns about campus safety and the need to prevent such horrific incidents from recurring. The police have assured the public that they are treating the case with utmost seriousness and are committed to bringing the perpetrator to justice. The all-women SIT is meticulously gathering evidence and conducting a thorough investigation to ensure a watertight case against the accused.

The incident has also become a political flashpoint, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticizing the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government for what they allege is a lapse in law and order and demanding accountability. The BJP claims that several members of its women’s wing, the Mahila Morcha, were either detained or placed under house arrest by the police when they attempted to stage a protest rally from Madurai to Chennai demanding justice for the victim. This has further intensified the political debate surrounding the incident, with accusations and counter-accusations being exchanged between the BJP and the DMK.

As the investigation continues, the Tamil Nadu Police reiterated their appeal for responsible reporting and public discourse. They emphasized that the focus should remain on supporting the victim and ensuring a fair and just outcome. The police also reaffirmed their commitment to transparency and assured the public that they would release updates on the investigation as and when appropriate, without compromising the integrity of the process. They urged everyone to cooperate with the investigation and refrain from spreading rumors or engaging in speculation that could impede the pursuit of justice.
