Pakistan Vows to Combat Disinformation and Terrorism in Pursuit of Peace and Stability
ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, addressing a high-level security meeting of the Apex Committee of the National Action Plan, emphasized the urgent need to tackle the escalating threat of digital misinformation and fake news, particularly on social media platforms. This challenge, he asserted, is fueled by distorted narratives and manipulated facts, often originating from external sources, aiming to undermine Pakistan’s stability and reputation. The meeting, attended by key figures including the Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir, federal ministers, and provincial chief ministers, underscored the gravity of this issue and its potential to derail the nation’s progress.
Prime Minister Sharif highlighted the detrimental impact of fabricated information circulating on social media, citing instances where false narratives were disseminated following incidents like the martyrdom of Rangers personnel on November 26. He stressed that countering this disinformation campaign is crucial for the success of all efforts aimed at eliminating terrorism and extremism within the country. While acknowledging the magnitude of the challenge, the Prime Minister expressed confidence in the government’s ability to overcome these hurdles and ensure that the sacrifices made by the armed forces are not in vain.
The Prime Minister also emphasized the presence of extremist elements, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, who pose a significant threat to the nation’s peace and stability. Identifying these elements as "Khawarij intruders," he underscored the government’s unwavering commitment to eradicating their influence. This determination, he stated, stems from the understanding that economic development cannot flourish without a secure and peaceful environment.
The government, according to the Prime Minister, is committed to pursuing a multi-pronged strategy involving federal and provincial authorities, along with security forces, to develop and implement comprehensive plans to address these challenges. He expressed his conviction that unity of purpose and action will be key to overcoming these obstacles and achieving lasting peace and stability in Pakistan.
Prime Minister Sharif’s remarks were made in the context of Pakistan’s recent assumption of a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, a development he hailed as a significant achievement for the nation. This position, he believes, will further enable Pakistan to contribute to global peace and security while also advocating for its national interests on the world stage.
The Prime Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to pursuing an agenda of prosperity and development. However, he stressed that the attainment of these goals is inextricably linked to the establishment of a peaceful and stable environment within the country. The fight against disinformation and extremism, therefore, is not merely a security concern but a prerequisite for achieving the broader socio-economic aspirations of the nation. The Prime Minister called for a united front against these threats, urging all stakeholders to work together to ensure a secure and prosperous future for Pakistan.
The Apex Committee’s meeting, marked by the presence of top military and civilian leadership, signifies a unified approach towards tackling the complex challenges facing the nation. The Prime Minister’s focus on countering disinformation underscores the evolving nature of threats to national security, highlighting the need for proactive measures in the digital domain. This meeting signals a renewed commitment from the government to address these challenges head-on and pave the way for a more secure and prosperous Pakistan.
