Local Government Association Survey Highlights Growing Threats to C surrounding Government Governance

The Local Government Association (LGA) has released a new report titled Collateral Damage:(Modified Collaborative Composition of Political information and Personal Consequences in official communications). The survey, held at the annual conference of the LGA, reveals that nearly half of councillors worldwide report having been subjected to ‘collateral damage’ when sharing their home addresses publicly. Additionally, more than 70% of councillors are experiencing ‘indentación in el rationamiento’ (indention in public thinking) and are feeling personally at risk of being undervalued as councillors take on governance roles.

The report indicates that existing constraints in the governance of local government are causing increasing personal and democratic risks for councillors. A surveyed 87% of councillors report that they or someone close to them have experienced ‘potential violence or death’ in the last year. Furthermore, 21% of councillors have faced such incidents, with 10% reporting private information being published. Among those who report experiencing abuse: 11% stated that they or someone close to them had known information that was publicized, while 64% mentioned relevant incidents taking place online, followed by 59% reporting incidents in person.

Among those initiating home visits, 8% claimed that a friend or colleague exhibited an intimidating or inappropriate demeanor, 1 in 20 reported being stably approached, 1 in 20 suffered physical harm, and 3% experienced actual violence as part of their role. These incidents vary significantly across councillors, with 84% of雌ONES experiencing at-risk situations compared to 66% of male councillors. Similarly, 86% of disabled councillors faced similar risks, up to 68% of non-disabled councillors.

Operational劣ity is another area affecting councillors, with 34% of LGBT+ councillors having been exposed to similar incidents compared to 20% of heterosexual councillors. The impact of abuse on councillors’ roles is particularly severe, with women and disabled councillors being more likely to cite abuse as a reason not to run for office. This calls for calls for the LGA to address its oversight mechanisms and improve the safety of its workforce.

C councillor Marianne Overton MBE, Chair of the LGA’s Civility in Public Life Steering Group, has emphasized the need for the Government to conduct meaningful oversight to prevent the rise of abuse and threats of violence in local government. However, no specific timelines or strategies have yet been outlined by the Government.

In 2025, 72% of councillors compared to 73% in 2024 reported experiencing the same level of harm, with similar percentages reporting feeling personally at risk. This has been particularly concerning in the context of the rising gender equality and sé_blockades, which seem to be staking councillors who operate in textBoxesters of wealth and power as targets.

The report concludes with a clear call for immediate action from both the LGA and the UK Government to combat this growing crisis. The LGA-St_KEEP) steering group has outlined a number of recommendations, including the removal of rules that require councillors to publish home addresses, improved enforcement of these rules, and investment in security measures to prevent physical harm escalate.

Moreover, the report calls for a systemic review of how thresholds for police action are determined when councillors risk being stabbied. Only 20 per cent of councillors from the minority ethnic groups experiencing significant harm in 2025 cited police action as a reason, compared to up to 59% of non-disabled councillors.

In conclusion, the LGA’s report highlights a pressing issue threatening the democratic infrastructure of local government. By addressing this, the country can ensure that councillors are not only safe but also have the chance to truly serve their communities. It is time for the UK Government to take a stand and provide the necessary fixes to safeguard the_texture of this significant threat.
