Karnataka Proposes Sweeping Digital Law to Curb Misinformation and Fake News

Karnataka has taken significant strides to combat digital misinformation and hate speech, signaling a growing concern over the unchecked spread of false information and inflammatory content on social media. The state is introducing two landmark legislative measures: the Karnataka Misinformation and Fake News Prohibition Bill, 2025, and the Karnataka Hate Speech and Hate Crime Prevention Bill, 2025. These bills aim to regulate the spread of fake news and hate speech, eradicating misinformation, and preventing hate crimes, ensuring a safer and less divisive digital environment.

The first bill focuses on mitigating fake news and its impact on social media. The bill enforces stringent penalties for individuals and platforms engaging in the creation, dissemination, and dissemination of false information. Offenders can be charged with seven years in prison, earning ₹10 lakh in fines, or both, depending on the severity of the offence.
