Karnataka cabinet unveils sweeping bill to criminalize online fake news

The Karnataka Misinformation and Fake News Prohibition Bill, 2025,/1/2/ is a significant legal move to tackle one of India’s most pervasive problems: fake news. Tabled in the latest cabinet meeting, the bill represents a decisive effort to address the pervasive harm caused by misinformation online, which continues to الحر.degree public trust in institutions and society as it spreads like wildfire across cyber platforms.

Under the draft legislation, individuals found guilty of spreading misinformation can face severe penalties, including prison sentences ranging from 2 to 7 years, depending on the severity of the act. The bill altogether would impose a complete ban on fake news on social media platforms, a measure that could disrupt public safety, elections, and the dignity of religious symbols and women’s rights.

The state government is responsible for enforcing the ban through a Regulatory Authority establishing a infrastructure for detecting and curbing fake news. The bill also defines misinformation as “false or misleading factual statements,” while fake news encompasses other manipulative techniques. Exemptions are granted for satire, opinions, and religious discourse, much like in previous acts, but they apply strictly to factual claims rather than general opinions.

The bill was heard with deliberations expected to conclude in a week, following legislative debate. The aim is to create a framework that balances the need for accountability with the practical realities of maintaining internet safety and public order.
