Industry body ISMA backs ethanol-blending programme, dismisses misinformation

The Ministry of petroleum and natural gas in the early weeks of the program dismissed some claims, pointing out that while ethanol has lower energy density than petrol, its impact on fuel efficiency is minimal.

The ministry clarified that the impact on fuel efficiency isn’t just “radical” but is actually marginal. This contradicts the previous assertion that ethanol would cause a big drop in fuel efficiency compared to petrol. The ministry emphasized that the program’s goal is to reduce crude oil imports by 85%, a move that would reduce tangible and intangible costs for consumers, including farmers. The ministry’s stance aligns with the fact that a 10% ethanol substitution can lead to a 5% reduction in fuel efficiency compared to petrol, according to an industry report.

However, the ANMI had previously criticized the ethanol blending program for causing “debatable” claims, much like the campaign against electric vehicles. The ministry clarified that while the ethical debate focused on misleading media, there was a neutral oversight by ANMI. ISMA, in its defense, emphasized that the ethanol blend is not just a technological improvement but a national imperative, driven by the necessity to rely on reliable fuel sources during the transition to electric vehicles.
