Edited TikTok Image Fuels Misinformation Regarding Indonesia’s Anti-Corruption Chief

Doctored Image Fuels False Claim of Ahok’s Appointment as Indonesia’s Anti-Corruption Chief

A manipulated image circulating on TikTok has sparked a flurry of misinformation, falsely claiming that Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto appointed former Jakarta governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, widely known as Ahok, as the head of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). The doctored image, which has garnered millions of views, has been debunked by fact-checkers and official sources, confirming that the actual appointee is senior police officer Setyo Budiyanto.

The fabricated image emerged shortly after President Prabowo’s inauguration of the new KPK chief in December 2024. It portrays Ahok seemingly engaged in conversation with President Prabowo, fueling speculation and excitement among some social media users. Accompanying text on the TikTok video proclaims, "Prabowo inaugurated Ahok as KPK Chief today!! Mega corruption from Jokowi’s (ex-Indonesian president Joko Widodo’s) era will be hunted to the death. Those who agree, come closer. Those who are corrupt must be panicking right now." The message clearly aims to capitalize on Ahok’s popularity and reputation for fighting corruption during his tenure as Jakarta governor.

However, a thorough investigation reveals the image to be a composite of two separate photographs. A reverse image search traces the original photo to a publication by Indonesian state news agency Antara on October 23, 2024. The authentic image depicts President Prabowo speaking with Agricultural Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman, not Ahok. The photograph was taken on October 1, 2024, shortly before Prabowo announced Sulaiman’s retention in his cabinet.

The image of Ahok that was superimposed onto the original photograph was published by local news outlet SINDOnews on August 3, 2024. The seamless merging of the two images created a convincing, yet ultimately false, narrative.

The spread of this disinformation highlights the growing concern surrounding manipulated media and its potential to mislead the public. Ahok’s controversial past, including accusations of insulting Islam, further adds to the complexity of the situation. While he was lauded for his efforts to combat corruption and improve Jakarta’s infrastructure, his outspoken nature also made him a target of criticism. The false claim of his appointment to the KPK tapped into existing sentiments, both positive and negative, surrounding his political career.

The appointment of Setyo Budiyanto as the KPK chief, confirmed by official sources, underscores the importance of verifying information before sharing it online. The rapid dissemination of the doctored image on platforms like TikTok demonstrates the ease with which misinformation can spread and the potential for significant impact on public perception.

As of January 13, 2025, Ahok has not been appointed to any government position. The fabricated narrative surrounding his supposed appointment serves as a stark reminder of the need for media literacy and critical thinking in the digital age. The incident underscores the vulnerability of online platforms to manipulation and the responsibility of users to scrutinize information before accepting it as truth. The incident also serves as a cautionary tale of the power of digitally altered imagery to distort reality and fuel false narratives. The potential consequences of such misinformation, particularly in the politically charged arena of corruption investigations, cannot be underestimated.
