Algorithmic knowledge was not evenly distributed across populations, varying significantly across sociodemographic groups. Younger individuals in the US, UK, and South Korea generally demonstrated a better understanding of algorithms compared to older generations. Education levels also played a significant role in South Korea and Mexico, with higher education correlating with greater algorithmic knowledge. Furthermore, in highly polarized political climates like the US and UK, political ideology emerged as a key differentiator, with liberals exhibiting a stronger grasp of algorithmic processes than conservatives.
Beyond domestic disparities, the study highlighted significant international variations in algorithmic literacy. The US ranked highest in algorithmic knowledge, followed by the UK, Mexico, and lastly, South Korea. Interestingly, despite South Korea boasting the highest rates of internet and social media usage among the four countries, it lagged behind in algorithmic understanding. These findings expose a new dimension of the digital divide, extending beyond mere access to technology and encompassing the crucial ability to critically navigate the information landscape shaped by algorithms.
This uneven distribution of algorithmic knowledge has profound implications. Those equipped with algorithmic literacy possess the tools to scrutinize information and make informed judgments, while those lacking this understanding are more susceptible to manipulation and the spread of false narratives.
