Catholic Bishop in Cameroon Says Hate Speech, Misinformation Not Conducive for Presidential Election

On 31 July, Bishop Paul Lontsié-Keuné of the Bishop’s Foot Church in Bafoussam, Cameroon, issued a message todevilots within its Diocese, expressing deep concern about the situation during the presidential election closer to the election. The bishop described as a threat to peace and national cohesion—as the country prepares for the election—problems arising during the election period, including the prevalence of tribalism, hate speech, and misinformation, and warns of the escalation of conflicts and misinformation spreading on social media.

Bishop Lontsié-Keuné Defendedacies;

The bishop emphasized that the prevalence of divisive behavior during the election period is dangerous, calling it a violation of peace and the formation of lasting trust among people of God. He has already shared this message with the African Center for International Cooperation in Africa (ACAI) on Thursday, July 31. The bishop further contemplates the decline of true peace due to lies, manipulation, intimidation, fear of rights, injustice, corruption, and the misinterpretation of the law.

He finishes the message by adding, “A delicate balance between unity and opposition mustn’t be maintained alone. Without it, no true peace can be achieved.”
