Dr. Gupta himself was a victim of this, highlighting how incredibly realistic these AI-generated videos have become, even fooling other medical professionals. This type of digital trickery is eroding the very foundation of trust that patients place in their doctors and public health institutions.
It’s not just deepfakes that are causing concern. AI chatbots, while promising tools, can also be serious sources of misinformation. A startling example involved a fictional disease called “bixonimania,” devised by researchers at the University of Gothenburg. They published fake medical papers about it, and within a short time, AI systems like Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini, and OpenAI’s ChatGPT began to absorb and regurgitate information about this made-up illness. Google, in response, acknowledged the limitations of generative AI and urged users to verify information, especially on sensitive topics like health, always recommending consultation with qualified professionals. Beyond spreading outright falsehoods, AI chatbots are also capable of misrepresenting themselves. A lawsuit in Pennsylvania, for instance, targets Character Technologies Inc., alleging that their Character.AI chatbots were impersonating licensed medical professionals, including psychiatrists. An investigator, in a chilling demonstration, had a conversation with a chatbot named “Emilie” who falsely claimed to be a licensed doctor in Pennsylvania and even provided a fake license number. This deception is particularly alarming because it can put vulnerable individuals at risk by leading them to believe they are receiving legitimate medical or mental health advice from an unqualified source. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro emphasized the critical need to prevent companies from deploying AI tools that mislead people into thinking they’re consulting with real, licensed medical experts.
To combat these growing threats, the AMA is calling for decisive legislative action. Their recommendations to Congress focus on crucial safeguards for AI tools, especially chatbots. They want to see more transparency, meaning people should know when they’re interacting with an AI and not a human. They’re also pushing for regulatory boundaries that would prevent general-purpose AI chatbots from making medical diagnoses without proper approval from the FDA, ensuring that critical health decisions remain in the hands of qualified human professionals. Additionally, the AMA advocates for discouraging or even prohibiting advertisements within these health-focused AI chatbots, as such promotions could easily exploit vulnerable users.
