AI Chatbots: A Challenge in Health Care?

Recent research by researchers at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai uncovers a critical issue with AI chatbots: their vulnerability to repeating or elaborating on false medical information. These chatbots, widely deployed across healthcare, including leading AI models like BERT and GPT-4, have emerged as a significant threat to patients’ trust in healthcare support. The findings indicate that some information added by AI chatbots might be subsequently deployed as baselines for providing misleading, inaccurate, and unverified medical advice.

Methods to Assess AI Chatbots’ Robustness

To locate such vulnerabilities, the researchers simulated the use of these AI chatbots in real-world medical scenarios. In a second round of querying, they added a simple one-line ” precursor” or safety prompt to the existing knowledge base sent to the AI chatbot. This added minimal overhead to the system’s runtime while significantly improving its ability to generate accurate and trustworthy responses. The test involved over 600 medical queries, some of which contain fabricated medical terms or queries. The results revealed that even small amounts of misinformation can consistently lead the AI to produce misleading alarms, confusing patients and undermining trust.

Reducing Preferential Overforming

The key to mitigating this issue lies in simple, instinctive safeguards. By subtly instructing developers to add such a safety prompt to the chatbot’s predefined knowledge base, the researchers hoped for a minimal impact on the AI’s ability to generate genuine, scientifically based answers. The practicality of this approach finds support in several efforts at Mount Sinai’s Windreich Department of Artificial Intelligence and Human Health, where integrating such prompts into standard tests and usage processes proves effective.

Building Resilience in AI Platforms

The findings of this study have far-reaching implications. Mobile health apps, for example, could benefit from such safeguards to reduce the reliance on AI-generated information when verifying patient data. Similarly, the integration of healthcare data into administrative systems could become more resilient when taking a cautious approach to fact-checking and verification processes.

Contributions of the Research

The study not only highlights a clear need for improved AI safety mechanisms but also paves the way for concrete steps towards building more resilient AI systems. The lead author,憶 Klang, notes that while these advancements represent a step forward, further refinement is essential. The team is now working on translating these safety guidelines into real-world applications, starting with real-world patient data and real-world medical systems.

The findings demonstrate a fundamental weakness in how practitioners of AI are managing the health information they are deployed in. By challenging the ethical, SAM-anthropic aspect of AI deployment, this work signals a movement towards safer, more trustworthy AI in healthcare. The results are a modest step toward a reality where such systems can operate with genuine and appropriate safeguards, ultimately enhancing both the patient’s trust in AI and the healthcare system’s resilience.
