429 handles or posts created on social media to spread misinformation during Cockroach Janata Party protest march | Mumbai News

The recent turmoil surrounding the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protest march has shed a harsh, unflattering light on the dark underbelly of the digital age. As protests flared on the ground, a parallel, more insidious battle was being fought in the virtual realm. The Maharashtra Cyber Cell recently uncovered a massive, coordinated effort to destabilize public order, revealing that 429 individual handles and social media posts were specifically engineered to disseminate fabricated, inflammatory, and derogatory disinformation. This wasn’t merely a byproduct of heated political discourse; it appears to have been a calculated campaign designed to stir unrest within Mumbai, across Maharashtra, and toward the nation at large.

The scale of this operation is staggering, with Instagram emerging as the primary breeding ground for these malicious narratives. Statistics provided by the authorities reveal that of the 429 flagged posts, a whopping 312 were hosted on Instagram alone, highlighting how visual-heavy platforms are being increasingly weaponized to manipulate public sentiment. Trailing behind were 55 posts on X (formerly Twitter), 40 on Facebook, and 22 on YouTube. The sheer volume of this activity within a single week underscores a disturbing trend: the ease with which bad actors can flood our digital squares with falsehoods, often moving faster than the truth can catch up to dismantle them.

Perhaps the most chilling aspect of this investigation is the role of artificial intelligence. Additional Director General of Police Yashasvi Yadav pointed out that over 32 percent of these posts were either entirely generated or significantly enhanced by AI. This represents a seismic shift in how propaganda is constructed; bad actors are no longer just sharing rumors, but are using sophisticated technology to manufacture events that never happened. By using AI to create realistic videos and audio clips, these manipulators are stripping away the public’s ability to distinguish between factual evidence and digital fabrication, turning our own screens into tools for deception.

The geography of this disinformation network also provides a warning about the global nature of modern agitation. While the vast majority—roughly 77 percent—of these deceptive handles originated from within India, a significant 23 percent were traced back to external sources. The Cyber Cell’s investigation highlights the involvement of international actors, including a specific X account based in Pakistan that had been active since 2026. This underscores that public unrest in our city is not always just a local matter; it is frequently being seeded by foreign interests who seek to exploit internal political tensions to create a wider, more chaotic impact on our national stability.

Consider the cruelty of the specific deceptions being peddled. In one particularly egregious instance on July 23, these actors circulated a heart-wrenching, entirely fake story claiming that a student had perished during the protests at Jantar Mantar and that his mourning mother had been denied justice by the authorities. The reality was a stark, rescue-filled relief, as the student had actually been stabilized and revived through timely CPR. Yet, the manipulators went as far as using AI to alter a video of the mother, twisting her image and voice to amplify a false narrative of state cruelty. These are not victimless crimes; they are targeted attacks on empathy, designed to provoke outrage by weaponizing human suffering.

Ultimately, the findings of the Maharashtra Cyber Cell serve as a profound wake-up call for every social media user. We live in an era where seeing is no longer believing, and the viral nature of these platforms means that a single, AI-generated lie can spark days of unnecessary panic and division. While the authorities are working tirelessly to scrub these threads and identify the culprits, the real defense lies in our own collective digital hygiene. Protecting the truth requires us to be more cautious, more skeptical of sensational content, and aware that whenever a protest ignites, there is likely a digital force working in the shadows, hoping to turn our genuine concerns into a manufactured crisis.
