Woman who feared ex-boyfriend would not take responsibility for pregnancy jailed for false rape claim

The case of 35-year-old Liau Wan Ting serves as a sobering reminder of how personal anxieties can spiral into life-altering legal consequences. After meeting a man on TikTok in 2024 and maintaining a complex, ongoing sexual relationship even after their romantic split in 2025, the two found themselves at a crossroads on a January night in 2026. Following a night of consensual intimacy, Liau’s personal insecurities began to manifest. Realizing that her birth control patch had expired the day prior, she found herself consumed by the fear of an unplanned pregnancy and the potential abandonment of her partner. Driven by a desperate need for a safety net—or perhaps a way to force accountability—she invented a traumatic narrative, falsely claiming she had been raped.

What followed was a swift and serious chain of events that transformed a private misunderstanding into a matter of state concern. Liau’s decision to involve her sister-in-law, and subsequently the authorities, set a massive, resource-heavy machine into motion. By filing a formal police report on the evening of January 7, she unknowingly invited the scrutiny of the Singapore Police Force’s Serious Sexual Crimes Branch. Her lie was not merely a fleeting comment; it was a sustained deception presented to multiple officers, leading them to believe that a violent crime had occurred, thereby necessitating the mobilization of forensic units and specialized medical professionals tasked with protecting genuine victims of abuse.

The gravity of Liau’s actions became apparent as the investigative process unfolded, revealing the sheer scale of the disruption she caused. Because she presented her false report with such conviction, the police had no choice but to treat the situation as an urgent, high-stakes investigation. This involved tracing the man in the middle of the night, subjecting him to the disorientation and stress of being detained, and forcing him to undergo medical procedures, including a blood draw. The emotional toll on the man—who was eventually cleared after providing a consistent, truthful account—cannot be overstated, as he was thrust into a legal nightmare for an act that he believed had been a consensual encounter between friends.

Even with the system’s best efforts to handle the situation delicately, the impact was profound. A total of thirteen officers, along with medical staff at the One-Stop Abuse Forensic Examination centre, were diverted from their duties to address a crime that never happened. By the time Liau finally broke down and admitted her fabrication shortly before midnight, the damage to public resources and the man’s peace of mind was done. She confessed that her continued deception was rooted in fear—initially of the consequences of her lie, and later of the harm her actions might bring to the man she had implicated. Eventually, she recanted her story, confirming that the encounter had, in fact, been entirely voluntary.

When the case reached the court, the prosecution emphasized the need for a strong deterrent. Deputy Public Prosecutor Kimberly Boo highlighted that while the law aims to protect survivors, false allegations act as a poison to the justice system. Such incidents do not just waste hours or tax dollars; they risk fostering a culture of skepticism that makes it harder for real victims of sexual assault to be believed. The prosecutor argued that for the sake of integrity in the legal process and out of respect for actual survivors, the court had to send a message that fabricating such serious claims carries severe, non-negotiable penalties.

Liau Wan Ting was ultimately sentenced to five weeks in jail, a decision that underscores the heavy price of dishonesty. While her motives were born from a very human, albeit deeply misguided, panic regarding her future, the ripple effects of her choice victimized everyone involved—from the man who was wrongfully treated as a suspect to the legitimate victims whose credibility may be threatened by such high-profile fabrications. As she faces her time behind bars, the case stands as a cautionary tale: when fear clouds judgment and leads to the weaponization of the law, the result is a tragic, irreversible loss of truth and public trust.
