Vishay Standard-Level 40 V MOSFETs Prevent False Triggering and Reduce Noise in Motor Control Circuits

In the rapidly evolving world of industrial electronics, the reliability of motor control systems is paramount. Vishay Intertechnology has recently addressed a common pain point in this field by introducing four new 40 V TrenchFET Gen IV n-channel power MOSFETs. Housed in the compact 6.15 mm by 5.15 mm PowerPAK SO-8 package, these devices—model numbers SIR5402DP, SIR5404DP, SIR5406DP, and SIR5408DP—are engineered specifically to handle the “noisy” electrical environments often found in hardware like power tools and automated machinery. By focusing on stability in high-interference settings, Vishay is aiming to make performance more predictable and resilient for engineers.

The core challenge these new MOSFETs solve is the phenomenon of false triggering. In sensitive motor control circuits, stray signals or electrical noise can often trick a component into switching on unintentionally, which leads to inefficiencies or system failures. Vishay has combated this by ensuring a high minimum gate-source threshold voltage of over 2.5 V. When this is paired with a strategic Qgd / Qgs ratio of less than 1, the devices achieve a level of stability that minimizes gate-induced voltage fluctuations. Essentially, these components are designed to “ignore” the background noise, keeping the motor running exactly as intended without unnecessary erratic behavior.

These advancements make the new lineup an ideal candidate for high-demand applications, particularly regarding synchronous rectification and DC/DC conversion. Whether it is a Brushless DC (BLDC) motor in a high-end drone, the motor inside a professional-grade power tool, or the complex controllers used in factory automation, precision is the name of the game. By reducing the impact of gate noise, Vishay has provided a robust solution that helps these systems run cooler and more efficiently, ultimately extending the operational lifespan of the end products.

Recognizing that every engineering project has unique requirements, Vishay has made these parts available in a variety of configurations to ensure flexibility. The four models cover a range of typical on-resistance values spanning from 0.9 mΩ to 2.5 mΩ at 10 V, with corresponding gate charge values between 32.6 nC and 82 nC. This allows designers to pick the perfect balance of efficiency and power capacity for their specific design needs. Furthermore, the company has emphasized reliability by ensuring each device is 100% RG- and UIS-tested, while also adhering to modern environmental standards, as all four units are both RoHS-compliant and halogen-free.

For companies looking to integrate this technology into their current development cycles, the wait is minimal. Vishay has announced that both sample sets and mass production quantities are currently available for order. While the standard lead time for these components is approximately 13 weeks, the availability of these parts gives hardware developers a clear pathway to upgrade their current motor drive architectures. For teams currently struggling with electromagnetic interference or looking to optimize their power stage, these components represent a tangible, off-the-shelf improvement.

Ultimately, these releases are a testament to the ongoing mission of Vishay Intertechnology, which maintains one of the most comprehensive portfolios of discrete semiconductors and passive components in the world. By catering to a massive array of sectors—ranging from automotive and healthcare to military and aerospace—they provide the “hidden” building blocks that power modern innovation. As the industry moves toward more sophisticated, automated, and mobile technologies, Vishay’s commitment to refining the performance and noise-immunity of power MOSFETs ensures that the technology behind our everyday tools and drones remains as dependable as it is powerful.
