Sultan Decries Social Media Misinformation, Urges Journalistic Integrity

Sokoto, Nigeria – His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, has voiced deep concern over the escalating proliferation of misinformation on social media platforms, emphasizing its detrimental impact on societal unity and peaceful coexistence. During an audience with the newly elected executive members of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Sokoto State Council, the Sultan underscored the vital role of journalists in combating this dangerous trend by adhering to the highest standards of professional ethics and verifying information before dissemination. He lamented the ease with which fabricated stories are presented as breaking news, rapidly reaching a global audience and potentially inciting discord within communities. The monarch urged media professionals to act as gatekeepers of truth and counter the spread of falsehoods.

The Sultan highlighted the destructive potential of social media misuse, particularly its capacity to fuel hatred and division. He condemned the actions of those who exploit these platforms to spread malicious propaganda and distort reality for their own agendas. He emphasized the importance of remembering shared values, emphasizing the Islamic principles of brotherhood, neighbourly kindness, and respect, which stand in stark contrast to the divisive rhetoric often propagated online. He called upon journalists to leverage their influence to promote unity and understanding among diverse groups.

The rapid spread of fake news was a key concern articulated by the Sultan. He illustrated the disturbing simplicity with which an individual can concoct a false narrative from the comfort of their home and, within minutes, have it disseminated worldwide under the guise of urgent, breaking news. This phenomenon, he argued, undermines the credibility of legitimate news sources and erodes public trust in information. The Sultan stressed the dire consequences of such misinformation, especially its potential to incite violence and disrupt social harmony.

In his address to the NUJ executives, the Sultan made a compelling case for ethical journalism as the antidote to the scourge of misinformation. He implored journalists to act as beacons of truth and integrity, contrasting their important work with the malicious intentions of those who propagate falsehoods. He argued that those spreading such harmful narratives often lack a strong moral compass, while journalists, by virtue of their profession, are bound by a code of ethics and a commitment to the truth. He called upon them to uphold this responsibility and actively counter the spread of misinformation.

The Sultan offered practical advice to journalists, urging them to prioritize verification above all else. He cautioned against rushing to publish information without thorough fact-checking, reminding them that negative news, particularly when false, spreads rapidly and can inflict lasting damage on individuals and communities. He emphasized the need for caution and diligence in reporting, particularly in the face of sensational or unverified information. He stressed the principle of “do no harm” as a guiding ethos for responsible journalism.

In his concluding remarks, the Sultan reiterated the importance of journalistic integrity in the face of the growing challenge of misinformation. He urged the NUJ members to act as champions of truth and accuracy, using their platforms to promote understanding and counter the divisive narratives that proliferate online. He expressed his confidence in their ability to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and contribute to a more informed and cohesive society. He thanked them for their service and wished them success in their endeavors.
