Hong Kong Coliseum Plagued by Series of Hoax Calls During Andy Lau Concert Finale

Hong Kong – The highly anticipated final performance of Andy Lau’s “Today… is the Day” concert tour at the iconic Hong Kong Coliseum descended into chaos on January 10, 2025, as a barrage of hoax calls disrupted the event and diverted emergency services. At least six malicious reports, ranging from fires and suspicious vehicles to fights and medical emergencies, flooded the police lines, prompting rapid responses from firefighters, paramedics, and police officers. Investigations quickly revealed the calls originated from the same mobile phone number, pointing towards a deliberate and orchestrated attempt to disrupt the concert and waste precious emergency resources. The incident has raised concerns about public safety and the vulnerability of large-scale events to such malicious acts.

The first call, received at approximately 8:51 pm, painted a dramatic picture of a backstage fire with an injured staff member. The caller, impersonating a concert employee, described an electrical fire and claimed to have sustained an injury. Firefighters raced to the scene, sirens wailing, only to discover that the report was entirely fabricated. The rapid succession of subsequent calls further compounded the confusion and stretched emergency services thin. Minutes after the initial fire report, a second call alerted authorities to a suspicious vehicle parked outside the venue, while a third call claimed a brawl was erupting inside the Coliseum. Police investigations swiftly debunked both reports, revealing them to be baseless.

The wave of false alarms continued unabated. Around 9:00 pm, a fourth call reported a concertgoer in medical distress inside the venue. Paramedics were dispatched, prepared to provide immediate medical assistance, but found no one requiring their services. The fifth call, received at approximately 9:37 pm, once again claimed a fire had broken out, prompting the dramatic arrival of four fire trucks. This, too, proved to be another false alarm, further highlighting the malicious intent behind the calls. The sixth and final call, received around 10:00 pm, summoned an ambulance back to the scene with a report of a collapsed individual at the main entrance. Like the previous reports, this also turned out to be a hoax, adding to the growing frustration among emergency responders.

The series of hoax calls not only disrupted the concert and diverted crucial emergency resources but also created an atmosphere of anxiety and uncertainty among concertgoers and staff. The constant arrival of emergency vehicles and the whispers of fires and fights undoubtedly detracted from the enjoyment of the performance and cast a shadow over what should have been a celebratory evening. The incident also exposed the vulnerability of large-scale events to malicious disruptions and the potential for such hoaxes to cause significant disruption and waste valuable resources.

Adding to the evening’s unusual events, two mainland Chinese men approached police officers seeking assistance with a ticket issue. The men had purchased six tickets for the concert, which initially appeared genuine. However, upon closer inspection, the tickets were identified as lost and therefore invalid. The men, understandably upset by the discovery, sought police intervention to resolve the situation. While unrelated to the hoax calls, this incident further underscored the complexities and challenges faced by law enforcement during large-scale events.

The Hong Kong police are now actively investigating the source of the hoax calls. Tracing the mobile phone number used to make the calls is a priority, and authorities are determined to hold the perpetrator accountable for their actions. The incident underscores the serious consequences of such malicious behavior, which not only wastes valuable emergency resources but also creates unnecessary panic and disruption. The police are likely to pursue charges related to wasting police time and potentially other offenses related to public mischief or endangering public safety. The investigation will also likely explore whether the hoax calls were motivated by any specific intention targeting the concert, Andy Lau, or the venue itself. Furthermore, it will be crucial to determine if the individual responsible acted alone or as part of a larger group.

The incident highlights the need for increased vigilance and preparedness in securing large-scale events. While it is impossible to completely eliminate the risk of such malicious acts, enhanced security measures, including stricter ticket verification processes, improved communication systems between event organizers and emergency services, and public awareness campaigns about the consequences of making false reports, can help mitigate the impact of such incidents. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible behavior and the potential consequences of abusing emergency services. It also emphasizes the need for continued collaboration between law enforcement, event organizers, and the public to ensure the safety and security of large gatherings. The incident will undoubtedly prompt a review of existing security protocols and potentially lead to the implementation of more stringent measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. The swift response and investigation by Hong Kong authorities demonstrate their commitment to maintaining public safety and holding those responsible for such disruptive acts accountable.
