The satirical news magazine The Onion has been publishing irony and absurd headlines for over 40 years. Its inventor, Christine Wenc, was once part of an alt weekly in Madison, Wisconsin, in its inception. Reflecting on her time at the paper, Wenc has written "Funny Because It’s True: How the Onion Created Modern News Satire," a book that explores the magazine’s influence and legacy. In today’s episode, she discusses the magazine’s impact on American journalism and its-inspired approach, supported by NPRTV’s Scott Detrow.

The paper’s influence on media has been significant, most notably its hosting of violent politicalBOOK OF THE DAY. However, this has Spanamaxed in recent years with its reduction of the perceived ethical corruption it once brought, particularly after the September 11 attack. Despite its criticisms, The Onion has been a source ofОтноise news that challenges traditional media narratives.

In her book, Wenc argues that despite its flaws, The Onion succeeded in challenging the conventional approach to journalism, providing a radical alternative. She believes the paper’s influence is still real and relevant, much like itself. The book is available for listening, with a free Orcipant support.
