In the quiet corridors of the Sohana police station, a new complaint has begun to carve out a familiar but devastating story of trust betrayed, a story that now leaves a 27-year-old woman grappling with the physical and emotional wreckage of a relationship she believed was heading toward marriage. The woman, whose identity has been protected in the official records, has accused Arun Kumar, a resident of Sector 67 in Mohali, of sexually assaulting her on the false promise of marriage, and then callously walking away when she became pregnant. According to the First Information Report, the accused not only refused to stand by his word but reportedly stopped taking her calls altogether, leaving her alone to face the consequences of a relationship that was built on deception. This is not merely a legal case involving jurisdictional transfers and police procedure; at its heart, it is a story about vulnerability, emotional manipulation, and the deep scars left when someone weaponizes love and commitment as tools of exploitation. The Sohana police have registered a case against the accused and have launched efforts to trace him, but for the woman, the pursuit of justice is only part of a much longer and harder journey toward healing.

The chain of events, as described in the complaint, began in 2023, when the woman and Arun first crossed paths. What started as a casual friendship soon developed into something more, with long, regular phone calls that gradually wove an invisible thread of intimacy between two people. She trusted him, confided in him, and slowly began to envision a future with him. Arun, she alleges, encouraged this vision. He spoke of marriage, of a shared life, of the kind of permanence that every person longs for when they open their heart to another. He repeatedly assured her that she was the one he wanted to marry, and these assurances were not vague or half-hearted—they were consistent, convincing, and delivered with the kind of emotion that made her lower her defenses. For a woman who had presumably built dreams around this relationship, his words were not just conversation; they were promises given weight by time and attention. The complainant has stated that their friendship ripened into love, and with it came the expectation that marriage would be the natural endpoint of their journey together.

Then came the night of August 12, 2023, a date that would later become hauntingly significant. It was her birthday, and Arun took her to a hotel in Sector 80 of Mohali to celebrate. Surrounded by the warmth of his attention and the sweetness of the occasion, she had no reason to suspect that the evening would lead to anything harmful. According to her complaint, it was on that night that Arun had sexual relations with her, and he did so under the continued and emphatic promise that he intended to marry her. In the eyes of the law, this is a critical distinction: physical intimacy that is secured through a false promise of marriage can constitute an offense, because the woman’s consent is rooted in deception. She did not simply give herself freely in a casual encounter; she gave herself to a man who had made her believe in a future that he did not intend to deliver. The birthday setting, meant to be a milestone of joy, became instead the beginning of an ordeal that would unfold over the following months as Arun continued to be physically intimate with her at various places, each time reaffirming his promise of marriage.

The gravity of her trust became undeniable in January 2025, when the woman discovered she was pregnant. This was not a moment of happy anticipation, but one of anxious uncertainty, and she did what any person in a committed relationship would do: she turned to the man who had promised to be her life partner. But instead of sharing her fear and seeking a way forward together, Arun allegedly responded with cold pragmatism. She told him about her pregnancy, and in response, he reportedly gave her medicines—a deeply troubling detail that suggests an attempt to terminate the pregnancy without her consent or medical guidance. When she realized that his intentions were not to support her, but rather to erase the evidence of their relationship, the betrayal became impossible to ignore. He then made clear that he would not go through with the marriage, effectively abandoning her at the most vulnerable moment of her life. After that, he stopped taking her calls, retreating into silence and leaving her to face the social, physical, and emotional consequences alone. The man who had once spoken sweetly of their future had become a stranger who refused to acknowledge even her existence.

With no other recourse, the woman turned to the justice system. She initially went to the Sector 36 police station in Chandigarh, where her complaint was recorded and her trauma documented in the formal language of a legal statement. Because the alleged incidents, including the hotel incident and subsequent encounters, fell within the jurisdiction of Mohali, the Chandigarh Police carefully forwarded the complaint along with relevant documents to the Sohana police station, ensuring that the case would be handled by the appropriate authorities. The Sohana police responded by registering a formal case against Arun Kumar under the relevant sections of the law, and they have since begun the task of tracing the accused. This jurisdictional transfer may be routine for police departments, but for the complainant it represents an additional layer of waiting, of repeating her story to yet another set of officials, and of watching the machinery of justice move at its own slow pace. The police have stated that the investigation is underway, but for the woman, every day of the search for the accused is a day spent balancing the weight of her trauma with the fragile hope that her account will be believed and acted upon.

Beyond the specifics of this case, the woman’s story is a sobering reminder of how often the promise of marriage is used as a weapon of sexual exploitation in our society. Her ordeal reflects a pattern all too familiar to those who work with survivors: a man who is charming and persistent, who makes sweeping commitments, who pushes for physical intimacy while assuring his partner that he is building a future with her, and who then vanishes when the consequences become real. Such cases are not just about one dishonest individual; they speak to a broader failure to protect women who trust too deeply and to hold accountable those who treat relationships as games of power and deception. The fact that this woman had to file a complaint, undergo questioning, and wait for legal proceedings to begin, all while processing the shock of betrayal, shows the immense courage required to stand up and demand justice. As the investigation continues, the hope is not only that Arun Kumar will be found and face the legal consequences of his alleged actions, but also that the woman will receive the support, empathy, and closure she needs to rebuild her life from the ruins of a promise that never should have been broken.
