Israeli Embassy in Nicosia Denounces "False and Misleading" Reports of Security Warnings to Citizens in Cyprus

Nicosia, Cyprus – The Israeli Embassy in Nicosia issued a strong condemnation on Tuesday night against what it described as a "false and misleading" report circulating in local media. The report, originating from an Israeli-based Russian news outlet, alleged that Israel’s security service had issued serious warnings to Israeli citizens in Cyprus. The embassy categorically denied these claims, asserting that no such instructions or warnings had been issued and that the report was a "complete fabrication" with no basis in reality.

The embassy expressed its disappointment over the publication of unverified claims, urging media outlets to seek confirmation from reliable sources before disseminating such information. This incident underscores the challenges posed by the rapid spread of misinformation in the digital age, highlighting the importance of verifying information before publication. The embassy’s swift response aimed to quell any potential panic or misunderstanding among Israeli citizens residing in or traveling to Cyprus.

The controversy surrounding the alleged security warnings emerged amidst heightened security measures implemented by Israeli carriers operating in Cyprus. Earlier in the week, Israeli intelligence agency Shin Bet instructed El Al and Arkia airlines to divert flights from Paphos International Airport to Larnaca International Airport, citing "security reasons that cannot be made public." This decision sparked speculation and fueled the dissemination of the false report.

Cypriot authorities moved quickly to address the situation and reassure the public. Deputy government spokesman Yiannis Antoniou emphasized that Cyprus’ airports are safe and that the measures implemented by Israeli airlines were specific to their operations. He confirmed that flights between Israel and Larnaca airport were continuing as normal, while the civil aviation department clarified that Paphos airport was operating normally despite a recent technical issue related to radio navigation, which had no impact on flight safety.

Police spokeswoman Kyriaki Lambrianidou affirmed that the heightened security measures were a result of ongoing geopolitical developments and did not represent a specific threat to Cyprus. She emphasized that any information regarding airport security should be obtained directly from the President’s office, underscoring the importance of relying on official sources for accurate information.

The incident also revealed a long-standing practice of Israeli carriers implementing stricter security protocols for passengers traveling to and from Cyprus. These protocols, which predate the recent events, have been a consistent feature of Israeli airline operations on the island. The Israeli embassy’s statement and the Cypriot government’s reassurances aimed to clarify the situation and dispel any unfounded concerns about security in Cyprus.

The Jerusalem Post reported that passengers affected by the flight diversions were not instructed to avoid traveling to Paphos independently. This information further supports the assertion that the situation did not represent a general security threat to the region, but rather a specific concern related to Israeli airline operations.

This incident highlights the need for careful verification of information, especially in the context of sensitive security matters. The rapid dissemination of false reports can create unnecessary anxiety and confusion, underscoring the importance of responsible reporting and reliance on official sources for accurate information. The Israeli embassy’s prompt response and the Cypriot government’s clear communication played a crucial role in mitigating the potential negative impact of the false report and maintaining public confidence in the safety and security of Cyprus.
