WMO Partners with Global Information Integrity Initiative to Combat Climate Disinformation

Combating Climate Disinformation: A Global Initiative for Information Integrity

The global fight against climate change faces a formidable, yet often overlooked, adversary: disinformation. The proliferation of false and misleading narratives about climate science, policies, and impacts poses a significant threat to effective climate action. To counter this growing menace, the Global Initiative for Information Integrity has been launched, uniting governments, international organizations, tech platforms, and civil society in a concerted effort to protect the integrity of information in the public sphere. This initiative aims to ensure that decisions on climate action are grounded in accurate, reliable, and science-based data, empowering informed decision-making and fostering a more resilient global society.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the leading authority on weather, climate, and water, plays a crucial role in this endeavor. Recognizing the detrimental impact of climate disinformation, the WMO is committed to leveraging its scientific expertise to promote the dissemination of accurate information and counter false narratives. This includes working closely with global partners to develop tools and strategies that enhance public understanding of climate science, strengthen early warning systems, and empower communities to make informed decisions about their future.

WMO Secretary-General, Celeste Saulo, underscored the critical importance of combating disinformation in the climate fight. “The spread of climate disinformation undermines global efforts to protect the planet and adapt to its changing climate,” stated Saulo. She emphasized the moral imperative and survival necessity of providing access to accurate, science-based information to governments, businesses, and individuals alike. In a world awash in misinformation, facts become not just informational tools but essential instruments for safeguarding humanity’s future.

The WMO’s involvement in the Global Initiative directly aligns with its ongoing commitment to the Early Warnings for All Initiative, a UN-backed effort to ensure universal access to early warning systems by 2027. By integrating its scientific expertise with the Global Initiative’s objectives, the WMO aims to cultivate a more informed, resilient, and climate-ready world. The combined efforts will address both the immediate threats posed by extreme weather events and the long-term challenges of climate change adaptation and mitigation.

The Global Initiative for Information Integrity has garnered support from a diverse array of stakeholders. UN Member States, including Chile, Denmark, France, Morocco, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, have pledged their participation. International organizations such as UN Climate Change, the WMO, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and representatives from civil society have also joined the coalition. This broad-based support underscores the global recognition of the need to address the intertwined threats of climate change and disinformation.

The initiative is guided by the United Nations Global Principles for Information Integrity, which provide a framework for fostering a healthier information ecosystem. These principles envision a digital world where individuals have greater control over their online experiences, the media they consume, and the use of their personal data. They promote choice, freedom, privacy, and safety for all, empowering informed and independent decision-making. Crucially, the principles offer support to those working to disseminate factual information in the public interest, while also protecting vulnerable and marginalized voices often targeted by disinformation and hate campaigns. The launch of the Global Initiative for Information Integrity represents a significant milestone in addressing the dual challenges of the climate crisis and the "infodemic" of disinformation. The WMO stands ready to collaborate with its partners to advance the integrity of information, contributing to a more sustainable and secure future for all. More information is available on the Global Initiative for Information Integrity website, and the launch event at the G20 can be viewed on UN TV. The collaborative approach of this Initiative signals a global commitment to ensuring that accurate information underpins the critical decisions needed to address the climate crisis.
