They address followers directly, share intimate details about their lives, and communicate in an informal style that feels like chatting with a close friend. Over time, followers develop what researchers call parasocial relationships—a one-sided sense of familiarity with media figures that can powerfully influence beliefs and behaviors. Recent meta-analyses demonstrate that these parasocial bonds affect health attitudes and actions, though the impact varies across different contexts and audiences.
