TYC to open dedicated office in New York to counter Chinese disinformation on martyr Lobga Rangzen

The Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC), the largest organization advocating for Tibetan independence in exile, recently marked the ninth day of its “Global Chain Hunger Strike” by announcing a bold, decentralized international advocacy campaign. Following the tragic self-immolation of activist Lobga Rangzen outside the United Nations headquarters in New York on July 2, the TYC has galvanized a movement that transcends geographic boundaries. This isn’t merely a protest; it is a desperate, organized plea for the global community to recognize the reality of the Tibetan struggle. By establishing a new, dedicated office in New York commanded by veteran activists Dhondup Lhadar and Lamsang, the TYC is shifting its focus from local demonstrations toward a sophisticated, long-term battle against the systematic erasure of the Tibetan narrative on the world stage.

At the heart of this new campaign is an urgent need to counter the Chinese government’s disinformation machine. General Secretary Tenzin Lobsang has explicitly called out Beijing’s efforts to distort the legacy of Lobga Rangzen, noting that state media has attempted to portray his final, harrowing sacrifice as the act of an aimless, unemployed man. By characterizing him as a product of a defunct, “feudal” past, the Chinese narrative seeks to strip his death of its political weight and moral significance. The newly inaugurated New York office is tasked with reclaiming his story, ensuring that the historical truth of his sacrifice is documented meticulously and preserved against the tide of state-sponsored propaganda.

The TYC is inviting every sector of the Tibetan community—from academics and researchers to artists, filmmakers, and digital creators—to become a stakeholder in this intellectual resistance. The organization recognizes that the fight for freedom is as much about cultural memory as it is about politics. By asking writers to research, filmmakers to document, and professionals to leverage their platforms, the TYC is fostering a grassroots renaissance in advocacy. They are effectively asking the Tibetan diaspora to transform their grief and frustration into tangible, creative, and factual evidence that can hold weight within the skeptical halls of international institutions.

The momentum of this movement is nothing short of historic. What began as a solemn vigil in Dharamshala, India, on July 19 has transformed into a resilient, rolling protest. As of late July, sixty-four individuals have already rotated through hunger strikes in various settlements, including Dakyiling, Odisha, and Kalimpong. Even the local Tibetan Market Association in McLeod Ganj has stepped up, joining the relay in a show of unity that proves how deeply this cause resonates with everyday people. This chain, which grows longer every day, serves as a physical manifestation of the Tibetan people’s refusal to be silenced, echoing their cry from the Himalayan foothills to the busy streets of New York City.

The organization’s resolve is underscored by a set of concrete, non-negotiable demands that target the core of China’s restrictive policies. The TYC is pressuring the United Nations to provide a formal response to Lobga Rangzen’s death, but their vision extends far beyond that single event. They are calling for the total repeal of the “Ethnic Unity and Progress Law”—a policy they view as an instrument of cultural assimilation—and are demanding international recognition of Tibet’s historical status. Furthermore, they continue to push for the immediate release of political prisoners, including the 11th Panchen Lama, whose long-term disappearance remains a somber emblem of China’s disregard for Tibetan religious and personal autonomy.

Ultimately, the TYC’s mission is a global appeal to the conscience of the international community. They are not merely asking for policy changes; they are asking for the world to stop looking away. The “Worldwide Chain Protest,” as the group describes it, will continue to expand in scope and intensity until their demands are met with something more than silence. In their own words, the organization calls on governments, media, and global citizens to engage with the facts of the Tibetan experience and take a stand for a people striving to preserve their history, their religion, and their fundamental right to a dignified future. This is a call for solidarity in an age where the truth is often a casualty of geopolitical silence.
