Turkey accuses Israel of ‘disinformation’ over F-35 objections

Tensions between Turkey and Israel have reached a new boiling point following recent comments from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who formally urged the United States to block Ankara’s access to advanced F-35 fighter jets and critical jet engines. Netanyahu publicly argued that providing Turkey with this high-end military technology would fundamentally disrupt the regional balance of power, insisting that the stability of the Middle East hinges largely on maintaining Israeli air superiority. This bold diplomatic intervention, delivered via an interview on Fox News, has been framed by Turkey as a direct attempt to steer Washington’s foreign policy and curb Ankara’s growing influence in the defense landscape.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry did not hold back in its response, categorizing Netanyahu’s remarks as a calculated and coordinated effort to sabotage Turkey’s defense procurement goals. By injecting his opinion into the discourse just a day before a significant NATO summit—where President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was slated to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump—the ministry believes Israel is manufacturing a disinformation campaign. Ankara views this timing not as a coincidence but as a strategic maneuver designed to undermine Turkey’s relationship with its Western allies at a critical juncture in global security discussions.

Beyond the specific issue of fighter jets, the Turkish government leveraged this exchange to launch a scathing critique of Israel’s broader governing actions. In its official statement, the Foreign Ministry accused the Netanyahu administration of using these outbursts to distract the international community from the ongoing humanitarian crises in Gaza. By pointing toward what it described as “genocide,” illegal annexation policies, and regional destabilization, Turkey is attempting to frame Israel as a rogue actor whose complaints about military balance are merely a smokescreen for its own controversial conduct on the ground.

The core of the friction lies in Turkey’s ambition to modernize its air force and build a domestic defense industry. Ankara was unceremoniously ousted from the U.S.-led F-35 program back in 2019, a consequence of purchasing Russian S-400 missile systems that Washington feared would compromise the stealth technology of the aircraft. Now, Turkey is looking to move forward with the KAAN, its own fifth-generation fighter jet, and is actively seeking American-made F110 engines to power the early prototypes. For Turkey, this is about achieving sovereign military capability; for Israel, it represents an unacceptable threat to the status quo of regional dominance.

The diplomatic stakes were further elevated by President Trump’s recent signals that he might be open to accommodating some of Turkey’s defense requests, a shift that has clearly rattled Israeli leadership. As the NATO summit loomed, the prospect of a breakthrough in technical cooperation between Washington and Ankara created a frantic push-and-pull dynamic. Analysts have noted that Turkey views the acquisition of these engines as a gateway to joining an elite circle of nations capable of producing advanced combat aircraft, a prestige it seems determined to secure despite external pressure.

Ultimately, this standoff reflects the deepening polarization between Turkey and Israel, two nations whose mutual frustrations have grown increasingly vocal since the outbreak of the war in Gaza. While Turkey maintains that its pursuit of defense technology is a standard exercise in national security and regional stability, Israel views these efforts as an expansionist danger that must be thwarted. As the dust settles from these high-level verbal exchanges, it remains clear that the future of Middle Eastern military cooperation will be defined as much by these diplomatic squabbles as it is by the hardware sitting on the tarmac.
