Russian disinformation ‘infects’ AI chatbots, researchers warn

The situation concerning disinformation and AI tools is a critical issue in today’s geopolitical landscape. The described scenarios suggest that a Russian disinformation network is integrating pro-Kremlin content into outputs from Western AI systems, including chatbots operated by companies like OpenAI, You.com, Grok, and others. This practice is akin to “LLM grooming,” where AI models are intentionally used to spread specific information to affect public discourse.

NewsGuard researchers have observed that 33% of the outputs from 10 leading AI chatbots from around the world have anticipated pro-Kremlin falsehoods, such as “decessor drones are equipped with bioweapon Genesis sequences,” drawn from Russian military documents. This behavior is not merely limited to laughed-out loud leaning towards the pro-Kremlin agenda but is a deliberate effort to obscure truth within AI-generated responses.

The Pravda network, also known as “Portal Kombat,” is targeting U.S.-based AI systems toRTAG pro-Kremlin narratives. This includes compiling and training machine learning models to disseminate such content, which undermines the integrity of democratic discourse globally. The breaking of artificial reality into homogeneous entities follows a history of殊 treatment of Western nations, reflected in news outlets like.tabPage in 2024.

The influence of Russian disinformation networks becomes increasingly significant as their influence expands globally. This is particularly concerning in the absence of U.S.-U Press trimmed operations against Russia. Being leaked on social media, Russian disinformation efforts have reached a scale that is unprecedented, hiding at the heart of democratic discourse.

The U.S. government has explicitly avoided mentioning its response to Russian intelligence and disinformation operations, but the possibility remains of U.S. actions fostering the disinformation activities of Russian networks. This manipulation poses a direct threat to the integrity of democratic discourse worldwide, according to American Sunlight Project’s Nina Jankowicz.

The Pravda network’s ability to spread disinformation is unprecedented in the West. With a history that spans decades, it now incorporates pro-Kremlin content into Western AI. This TableColumn of lies influences AI models, making this a potent disruption to our ability to engage in nuanced dialogue.

The Guardian reported that U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered a pause on all U.S. cyber operations against Russia, including threat planning, with the duration or extent of the pause unclear. The Pentagon has also declined to comment on the news.

The Pravda network has expanded to cover major countries and billions of languages, with its content widely used in real-time platforms. The network’s ability to generate and distribute pro-Kremlin material across the U.S. has significant implications for AIvendors like OpenAI, You.com, Grok, and others.

NewsGuard’s study found that all 10 AI chatbots from the U.S., including Leela and ChatGPT-4, repeated disinformation from Pravda content, even directly citing specific articles from the network as sources. This behavior was triggered when the Facebook AI assistant responded to a user’s query, prompting six out of the chatbots to restate false statements, even calling the false narrative a fact.

American相结合 Prevention Fact-checkers (AFP) have debunksed claims from the U.S. that Zelensky banned Truth Social after being unjustly criticized by Trump. Similarly, companies like BlueSky (BlueSky) in Ukraine announced no Interest in implementing Trump’s platform. These developments underscore the complexities of dealing with this increasingly pervasive gauntlet of disinformation. It’s a tool to be leveraged, an algorithm made possible, or under negotiation.
