A World on the Brink: Global Risks Report Paints a Grim Picture of the Decade Ahead

The 20th edition of the World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report, released in January 2025, paints a stark and concerning picture of the next decade. The report, based on the insights of over 900 global experts, reveals a world grappling with escalating and interconnected risks across geopolitical, environmental, societal, and technological domains. While economic risks are not the most immediate concern, they remain intertwined with other pressing challenges, posing a significant threat to global stability and progress. The report highlights a growing sense of pessimism among experts, with a majority anticipating a turbulent and unstable global landscape by 2035, driven primarily by environmental, technological, and societal pressures.

The most immediate risk identified in the report is state-based armed conflict, reflecting the heightened geopolitical tensions characterizing the current global landscape. Nearly a quarter of the respondents ranked this as the most severe concern for the year ahead. Adding to this volatile mix, misinformation and disinformation continue to pose a significant short-term threat, eroding trust in institutions and fueling societal polarization. This marks the second consecutive year these informational risks have topped the short-term concerns, underscoring their persistent and insidious impact on social cohesion and effective governance. Further compounding the short-term risks are extreme weather events, cyber-espionage, and cyber warfare, all contributing to a sense of immediate global instability.

Looking beyond the immediate future, the report emphasizes the looming threat of environmental risks. Extreme weather events, biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse, critical changes to Earth systems, and natural resource shortages dominate the top long-term risks over the next ten years. Pollution, a significant contributor to both environmental degradation and human health problems, is ranked highly as both a short-term and long-term risk, reflecting a growing awareness of its pervasive impact across air, water, and land. The prominence of extreme weather events across all timeframes, from immediate to long-term, underscores the urgency of addressing climate change and its cascading consequences.

The long-term outlook is further complicated by technological risks, particularly those associated with misinformation, disinformation, and the potential adverse outcomes of artificial intelligence. These digital threats amplify existing societal vulnerabilities and could exacerbate existing inequalities, further destabilizing the global landscape. The confluence of these environmental and technological risks creates a complex and challenging scenario for the coming decade, demanding innovative solutions and collaborative action to mitigate their potential impact.

The report underscores the interconnected nature of these risks, highlighting how geopolitical tensions, a fracturing of global trust, and the climate crisis are placing unprecedented strain on the global system. This interconnectedness makes it clear that addressing these challenges requires a holistic approach, recognizing that solutions in one area can have far-reaching consequences in others. The experts warn that failure to address these interconnected risks could lead to a downward spiral of instability, with consequences that will reverberate for generations to come.

The report emphasizes the urgent need for global cooperation and collective action to navigate these complex and interconnected challenges. While acknowledging the growing trend towards fragmentation and a more competitive global order, the report stresses that turning inward is not a viable solution. The next decade presents a critical window of opportunity for global leaders to rebuild trust, strengthen international cooperation, and foster resilience in the face of mounting risks. The report calls for a renewed commitment to dialogue and collaboration, urging nations to prioritize collective action to secure a sustainable and inclusive future for all. The stakes, according to the report, have never been higher.
