Understanding Young People’s Information Demand in Romania

The study reveals that young people in Romania exhibit significant variation in their understanding and relationship with information and media consumption habits. Most of the participants, about 7 out of 10, believe they lack a large amount of information, while only one in ten consider themselves very or very informed. This discrepancy in information access significantly impacts their engagement with political and social issues.

Disinformation and Its Impact

The research underscores the severe effects of disinformation on both the economy and society. Disinformation can lead to students lacking trust in institutions, contributing to market instability and economic uncertainty. Additionally, it can exacerbate social tensions, delaying government responses crucial for preserving stability and generating able employment opportunities. Disinformation also hinders corporations from making informed decisions, impairing economic policies and business strategies.

The Role of Young People in Information Management

Disinformation, lack of knowledge, and the spread of false information pose a critical challenge to the economy.studied factors, such as confirmation bias and information accessibility, have been a focal point. Young people overly rely on confirmatory information and often receive it from trusted sources, like friends or media, contributing to a skewed perception of reality.

Peer Influence and Trust in Media Literacy

The study identifies significant differences in media literacy among genders, with girls generally accounting for more accurate information. Confirmation bias influences their decision-making processes, as they tend to accept information that aligns with their beliefs more readily. However, empirical evidence suggests the importance of accurate information for navigating a chaotic information landscape.

The Media Education Program: A Crucial Focus Area

Since 2017, the Center for Independent Journalism (CJI) has implemented a Media Education Program that aims to enhance media literacy among children and young people. This initiative has been instrumental in shaping labor and educational practices in Romania. Over 100,000 adults have undergone this program, targeting nearly 150,000 students. The goal is to equip young people with the skills necessary to discern credible information, becoming better informed individuals capable of making independent choices.

Conclusion: A Call for Action

The findings highlight the need for a comprehensive approach to address the challenges arising from insufficient information access and misinformation. Mass communication campaigns are essential to foster trust in institutions and humanize the role of media literacy. By prioritizing accurate information and addressing improper information sources, Romania can empower young people to participate more effectively in the political and social systems they are embedded in.
