62% of Young Bulgarians Willing to Defend Country Amid Rising Disinformation – Novinite.com

Understanding the Dynamics of Russian Disinformation in Bulgaria

The recent report by the Center for the Study of Democracy (CSD) highlights how President Vladimir Putin’s disinformation campaign is a central driver of political tensions in Bulgaria, exacerbating divisions between the Bulgarian government and Western Allies. This disinformation effort is particularly targeted at young Bulgarians, many of whom are highly susceptible to misleading narratives. The broader campaign, supported by pro-Russian outlets, is used to divert attention from its actual actions, as well as to deepen divisions within Europe.

A survey compiled among Bulgarian Bulgarians aged 16–25 revealed alarming insights. Over 40% of participants revealed to be either uninformed or only moderately informed about the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict and the Human Rightsresolution with Bulgaria. Additionally, a quarter of these young people found the information they encountered to be unreliable. Despite their low level of engagement with global conflicts, 62% expressed confidence in their ability to defend their country if attacked. Simultaneously, 39% believed the West is using these conflicts to maintain geopolitical dominance, pointing to a growing divide within the Western world.

The CSD report underscores the significant role of disinformation in shaping political opinions, particularly when targeting domestic issues. Many Bulgarians today resonate with statements about Bulgaria’s NATO and EU membership, as well as concerns about foreign interests. According to the survey, 40% to 52% of participants supported these disinformation claims, highlighting how foreign-backed narratives are reshaping political discourse.

However, the extent of disinformation’s impact on Bulgaria’s democratic stability remains significant. The report warns that safeguarding the information space in Bulgaria is a direct threat to its stability and reliance on NATO and the EU.Improving media literacy, fostering critical thinking, and enhancing protection against foreign influences are essential actions to address this issue.

In conclusion, the Russian disinformation campaign in Bulgaria is a multifaceted challenge to stability and sovereignty. By addressing the root causes of the influence, societies like Bulgaria can build stronger institutions and remain at the forefront of global dialogue.
