Woman Defrauded of €800,000 by AI Impersonating Brad Pitt

AI-Generated Brad Pitt Swindles French Woman Out of €830,000 in Elaborate Romance Scam

A devastating romance scam has come to light, highlighting the increasingly sophisticated tactics employed by fraudsters exploiting the power of artificial intelligence. A 53-year-old French woman, an interior designer, fell victim to an elaborate scheme involving an AI-generated persona of Hollywood actor Brad Pitt, resulting in the loss of €830,000 (approximately £700,000). The scam began with a seemingly innocuous message from an account purporting to be Jane Etta Pitt, the actor’s mother, who claimed the French woman was precisely the kind of person her son needed. This initial contact paved the way for the AI-generated "Brad Pitt" to enter the scene, showering the victim with attention and affection.

Over the subsequent 18 months, the meticulously crafted AI persona embarked on a calculated campaign to win the woman’s trust and affection. The scammer employed a range of tactics, including sending personalized poems, passionate declarations of love, and ultimately, a marriage proposal. This carefully orchestrated romantic facade masked the true, sinister intention: to manipulate the victim into parting with her money. The woman, who was undergoing a divorce from a wealthy entrepreneur at the time, found solace and connection in the seemingly genuine affection from the AI-generated Pitt, making her particularly vulnerable to the scammer’s manipulation.

The initial requests for money were relatively small, disguised as customs fees for luxurious handbags that the "actor" claimed to be sending her. The first request was for €9,000. As the "relationship" progressed, the scammer escalated the financial demands, concocting a story about Pitt being hospitalized with kidney cancer and desperately needing funds for treatment. To further exploit the victim’s empathy and solidify the deception, the scammer claimed that Angelina Jolie, Pitt’s real-life ex-wife, had frozen his bank accounts, preventing him from accessing his own fortune.

Despite harboring some doubts, the woman’s concerns were allayed by communications from a supposed "doctor" who corroborated the fabricated medical emergency, emphasizing Pitt’s dire condition and urgent need for financial assistance. This seemingly independent confirmation pushed the victim to transfer a staggering sum of approximately €800,000 to a Turkish bank account. The combination of emotional vulnerability, the persuasive nature of the AI-generated persona, and the fabricated medical crisis created a perfect storm that enabled the scammer to successfully extract a substantial amount of money.

The victim’s daughter, recognizing the hallmarks of a scam, attempted to warn her mother, but her concerns were dismissed. The woman, blinded by the perceived love and connection with the AI-generated Pitt, remained convinced of the relationship’s authenticity. It was only when the real Brad Pitt was publicly seen with his current partner, Inès de Ramon, in the summer of 2024, that the victim finally confronted the devastating reality of the situation. The shattering realization of the elaborate deception led to severe emotional distress, requiring hospitalization for depression.

This case underscores the alarming potential for AI technology to be misused in sophisticated scams targeting vulnerable individuals. The emotional manipulation employed by the scammer, combined with the convincing portrayal of a beloved celebrity, highlights the need for increased awareness and education about the evolving nature of online fraud. The victim’s decision to share her story with French broadcaster TF1, though later retracted due to online harassment, serves as a stark warning about the devastating consequences of these increasingly sophisticated scams and the need for greater vigilance in the digital age. The incident also underlines the importance of supporting victims of such crimes and addressing the psychological impact of these traumatic experiences.
