Sharda University and Jagran New Media to Host National Seminar on Combating Misinformation with AI and Fact-Checking Tools

Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh – Sharda University’s School of Media, Film, and Entertainment, in partnership with Jagran New Media, is set to host a national seminar on January 22, 2025, addressing the critical issue of combating misinformation in the digital age. The seminar, titled "AI in Combating Misinformation: Advancing Fact-Checking Practices," will delve into the innovative applications of artificial intelligence and fact-checking technologies in identifying and countering fake news. The event will be held in a hybrid format, allowing participants to attend either in person at the Anand Swaroop Auditorium on Sharda University’s campus or virtually, maximizing accessibility and reach.

The proliferation of misinformation online poses a significant threat to informed decision-making and democratic processes. With the advent of social media and the rapid dissemination of information, false or misleading content can quickly spread, impacting public opinion and even inciting real-world consequences. The seminar aims to explore how AI can be leveraged to detect and mitigate the spread of misinformation, while also enhancing traditional fact-checking methods. This collaborative effort between Sharda University and Jagran New Media reflects a commitment to fostering media literacy and responsible information consumption.

Experts from academia, industry, and leading research institutions will gather to discuss the latest advancements in AI-powered fact-checking tools and techniques. The seminar will provide a platform for sharing research findings, best practices, and innovative solutions for tackling misinformation. A key highlight of the event will be a hands-on workshop conducted by fact-checkers from the Google News Initiative (GNI). This workshop will equip participants with practical skills in identifying and debunking false information, empowering them to become more discerning consumers of online content.

The seminar boasts an impressive lineup of speakers, including Subin Sudhir, Associate Dean and Professor of Marketing at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Indore; Dr. Tavapreetesh Sethi, founding head of the Center of Excellence in Healthcare at IIT Delhi; Swapnil Mehta, founder of Simple (Cambridge, MA); and Santosh K Patra, chairperson of MICA’s media, entertainment and sports business division. These distinguished experts will share their insights and experiences, contributing to a comprehensive discussion on the challenges and opportunities presented by the fight against misinformation.

The collaboration between Sharda University and Jagran New Media underscores the importance of a multi-faceted approach to combatting misinformation. By bringing together academic researchers, media professionals, and technology experts, the seminar aims to foster a collaborative environment for developing effective strategies. The event will also provide a platform for researchers and participants to present their own research papers, contributing to the growing body of knowledge in this critical area.

Under the leadership of Prof. (Dr.) Ritu S Sood, Dean of Sharda School of Media, Film and Entertainment, and Rajesh Upadhyay, Editor-in-Chief and Executive President of Jagran New Media, the seminar promises to be a significant event in the fight against misinformation. With Dr. Shishir Kumar Singh serving as convenor and an organizing committee comprising Dr. Mukta Martolia, Dr. Shrinkhla Upadhyay, and Dr. Sonali Srivastava, the event is poised to deliver valuable insights and practical solutions for addressing the escalating challenge of fake news in the digital age. The seminar’s focus on empowering individuals with the skills to critically evaluate information highlights a proactive approach to media literacy, essential for navigating the complex digital landscape.
