Penn State’s "Fake-a-thon" Exposes the Perils and Detectability of AI-Generated Fake News
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – In an era increasingly plagued by misinformation, Penn State’s Center for Socially Responsible Artificial Intelligence (CSRAI) recently concluded its inaugural "Fake-a-thon," a two-stage competition designed to explore both the creation and identification of AI-generated fake news. The event, held from April 1st to 5th, drew significant participation from Penn State students, showcasing the potential of generative AI tools like ChatGPT to fabricate believable false narratives and the challenges in discerning fact from fiction.
The first stage of the competition, "Fake News Creation," tasked participants with crafting realistic fake news stories using AI tools. Over 110 participants submitted 252 entries, demonstrating the ease with which such technology can be employed to generate deceptive content. Kyle Smith, a doctoral student in the College of the Liberal Arts, secured first place with a fabricated story about a hospital bombing in Gaza, highlighting the potential for AI-generated misinformation to exacerbate real-world conflicts. Mahjabin Nahar, a doctoral student in the College of Information Sciences and Technology, took second place with a story based on a real legal case involving former President Donald Trump, demonstrating how AI can manipulate existing news narratives. Ethan Capitano, an undergraduate student in the College of the Liberal Arts, earned third place with a story about Penn State’s football team adopting fictitious helmet technology, showcasing the potential for AI to create entirely fabricated scenarios.
The judging process for Stage 1 underscored the insidious nature of AI-generated fake news. Sixteen entries were initially flagged as finalists because none of the judges could identify them as fabricated. The final winners were selected based on the potential societal impact of their stories. The winning entries blended elements of truth with fabricated details, making them particularly difficult to discern as fake. This blend of truth and fiction, coupled with their appeal to common aspirations or anxieties, renders these stories particularly dangerous, according to the CSRAI organizers. The competition revealed how generative AI can be used to create sophisticated, believable fake news that can readily deceive even discerning readers.
Stage 2 of the competition, "Fake News Identification," shifted the focus to detecting AI-generated misinformation. Participants who did not take part in Stage 1 were tasked with evaluating 18 news stories, half of which were genuine and half of which were the fake entries from Stage 1. Each Stage 1 entry was evaluated by three Stage 2 participants, further emphasizing the collaborative effort needed to combat the spread of misinformation. While no single participant correctly identified all 18 stories, the four winners—Hanlin Yang, Emma Carpenetti, Dibya Mishra, and Zishan Wei, all undergraduate students from the College of Engineering—demonstrated a superior ability to discern fact from fiction. Their success highlighted the importance of critical thinking and media literacy skills in navigating the complex information landscape.

The ease with which participants generated believable fake news in Stage 1 underscored the growing threat posed by AI-powered disinformation campaigns.
