Brad Pitt Responds to Reports of Elaborate Romance Scam Involving His Likeness

Brad Pitt Denounces AI-Powered Scam That Defrauded French Woman of €830,000

Hollywood actor Brad Pitt has publicly condemned an elaborate AI-assisted scam that defrauded a French woman out of €830,000 (approximately £700,000). The sophisticated scheme involved impersonating the actor and manipulating the victim into believing they were in a romantic relationship. The perpetrators leveraged artificial intelligence technology to craft convincing messages and even fabricate images, ultimately exploiting the victim’s emotional vulnerability and admiration for the celebrity.

The 53-year-old victim, an interior designer going through a divorce, recounted her ordeal in an interview with French broadcaster TF1. She explained how the scammers, posing as Pitt, showered her with affection, declarations of love, and even a marriage proposal. The meticulously crafted messages, seemingly tailored to appeal to her emotional state, made her believe the relationship was genuine. The "relationship" unfolded over a year and a half, during which the scammers gradually built trust and ultimately manipulated her into sending large sums of money.

The scam began with requests for money to cover customs fees for luxury handbags the fake Pitt promised her. As the "relationship" progressed, the fraudsters escalated their demands, claiming the actor was hospitalized with kidney cancer and required funds for treatment. To further their deception, they sent fabricated images purportedly showing Pitt in a hospital bed. Despite her daughter’s warnings that she was being scammed, the victim remained convinced the relationship was real, blinded by the carefully constructed illusion.

The charade finally unraveled in the summer of 2024 when the victim saw the real Brad Pitt with his current partner, Inès de Ramon. The realization that she had been deceived was devastating, highlighting the profound emotional and financial impact of the scam. She confessed to TF1 that the eloquent and romantic nature of the messages, combined with the allure of a relationship with a renowned actor, made it difficult to discern the deception.

Responding to the news of the scam, Pitt’s spokesperson issued a statement condemning the perpetrators and emphasizing the importance of online safety. "It’s awful that scammers take advantage of the strong bond between fans and celebrities," the spokesperson said. "This is an important reminder not to respond to unsolicited online messages, especially from actors who are not present on social networks." This incident underscores the increasing sophistication of online scams and the need for vigilance, particularly when interacting with individuals online, even those seemingly representing well-known figures.

French authorities have launched an investigation into the elaborate scheme, highlighting the seriousness of the crime. This case serves as a stark warning about the potential dangers of online interactions and the manipulative tactics employed by scammers. It also raises concerns about the growing use of AI technology in perpetrating fraud, adding another layer of complexity to online safety. As AI technology continues to evolve, it is crucial for individuals to remain vigilant and exercise caution when engaging with unfamiliar individuals online.
