International politics and health information also ranked highly among misleading content. Experts and academics have increasingly expressed concern over the growing prevalence of misinformation, especially deepfakes—manipulated content created through artificial intelligence (AI). This escalation poses challenges to the public’s ability to discern truthfulness in the information they consume.
The Ofcom research illuminated a worrying trend: while 45% of participants felt confident in their ability to assess the credibility of informational sources, that number plummeted to 30% regarding their skills in identifying AI-generated or altered images, audio, or video. This disparity has raised alarms about the public’s diminishing trust in traditional news outlets. Indeed, skepticism regarding the reliability of news sources is widespread, with 29% of respondents believing in the existence of a group that secretly governs the world, while 42% are convinced that crucial news stories are deliberately concealed by mainstream media. Moreover, less than a third of participants (32%) agreed that journalists adhere to ethical standards in their reporting.
The upcoming Online Safety Act is expected to enhance Ofcom’s responsibilities, aiming to improve media literacy across the UK. The timing of the research coincides with Ofcom’s announcement of a chairman for its new Disinformation and Misinformation Advisory Committee. Cybersecurity expert Marijus Briedis from NordVPN emphasized the urgency for the government and media to act against the pervasive spread of misinformation. He pointed to AI’s role in fabricating realistic yet deceptive narratives. Briedis highlighted the potential for deepfakes to exploit public figures—including politicians and journalists—serving as tools that can mislead the public and potentially lead to financial scams. He referenced a recent incident where a deepfake impersonating financial expert Martin Lewis deceived a victim out of £76,000 through a fraudulent investment scheme, underscoring the pressing need to address this issue to protect democratic processes.
Deepfakes are becoming increasingly sophisticated, making them harder for the average person to detect. Experts recommend that individuals look for subtle signs—such as unnatural head movements, mismatched lighting, or abnormal mouth movements—to identify possible deepfakes and protect themselves from falling prey to scams.
