Yei youth trained in combating misinformation and digital literacy

In the heart of Yei River County, a quiet but profound transformation recently took place as thirty young leaders gathered for a three-day intensive workshop. Organized by the Internet Society South Sudan Chapter, the event served as a bridge between the vibrant potential of local youth and the expansive possibilities of the global digital landscape. Bringing together a diverse tapestry of students, activists, faith leaders, and community representatives, the training was more than just a technical seminar; it was an investment in the human capital of Central Equatoria State, aimed at turning the internet from an abstract tool into a tangible driver for personal and societal growth.

At the center of this initiative was a powerful challenge issued by James Wani Banja, the Acting Director for Planning and Peacebuilding. Addressing the participants, he urged them to look beyond the immediate satisfaction of completing a workshop and instead envision a future where their digital fluency commands respect in a competitive global market. His message was rooted in empowerment: he encouraged these young people to view their new certifications not as a finish line, but as an entry point into a sophisticated digital economy. By pushing them to think about career scalability and advanced technical mastery, he redefined the digital space as a vital playing field where they are not just spectators, but architects of their own professional destinies.

The curriculum touched on a critical nerve, balancing the euphoria of connectivity with the sobering realities of modern cyberspace. Participants delved deep into the nuances of digital communication, learning how to present themselves professionally, navigate online marketplaces, and securely manage their digital footprints. Perhaps most importantly, the training addressed the darker side of the web. In a region where misinformation and hate speech can have real-world consequences, these young leaders were equipped with the critical thinking skills needed to identify bias, combat harmful narratives, and foster a culture of digital responsibility that prioritizes peace over division.

For Raymond Duduka, one of the attendees, the impact was both immediate and personal. Reflecting on his journey, he noted that many of his peers previously viewed the internet as a mysterious or even intimidating place, often unsure of how to leverage it for anything beyond basic social interaction. Through the program, he discovered the power of intentional communication, learning how to tap into global networks to find employment, education, and business prospects that were previously out of reach. For Raymond, the training flipped a switch, turning a tool of potential exploitation into a mechanism of control, where he can now manage his own digital account with confidence and a clear understanding of the repercussions of cybercrime.

The enthusiasm was shared by Jeniffer Nyoka Justin, who highlighted the practical, entrepreneurial side of the experience. For her, the most eye-opening aspect was the concept of digital entrepreneurship—the realization that the digital world offers a legitimate, accessible storefront for those with the skills to use it. Armed with this new knowledge, Jeniffer is now looking at ways to launch her own business online, transforming her local talents into a digital enterprise. Her outlook reflects a growing trend among South Sudan’s youth: a move toward innovation and proactive economic participation, proving that with the right guidance, the digital divide can be bridged by ambition and localized initiative.

As the program concluded, the thirty graduates left with more than just certificates; they departed with a new sense of agency. This three-day workshop successfully demystified the internet, framing it as a professional asset rather than a passive entertainment platform. By fostering a cohort that is as ethically conscious as it is technically skilled, the Internet Society South Sudan Chapter has helped lay a foundation for a more interconnected and prosperous Yei River County. These young leaders now stand as ambassadors for responsible connectivity, ready to navigate the complexities of the digital age while contributing to the broader development and stability of their nation.
