Science Feedback, in collaboration with QuotaClimat and Data for Good, has been awarded a grant of $1.6 million from the Google News Initiative (GNI) to develop Climate Safeguards—an AI-powered system designed to track and analyze climate misinformation. This innovative initiative aims to empower journalists, media organizations, and regulators to respond to misleading climate narratives with accurate, science-based insights. By integrating advanced AI technology with traditional journalism and policy-making, Climate Safeguards will serve as a critical tool for amplifying the power of science and ensuring the credibility of climate change reporting.

The partnership between these organizations highlights a growing trend in journalism of leveraging data and technology to address pressing environmental challenges. Through the Climate Safeguards project, science literacy and objective journalism will be revolutionized by the ability to monitor and filter out skeptical, Influential voices. This system will help journalists, students, and policymakers to stay informed about climate change and to make evidence-based decisions that can lead to real-world change.

Originally developed for analyzing political misinformation during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Climate Safeguards system has been designed to extend its reach to the climate sector. The AI-powered insight foreseees and analyses climate-related misinformation, ensuring that informed and truthful reports are prioritized over fake news and misinformation. By partnering with the Google News Initiative, the project will access the latest technologies and services to enhance its capabilities and deliver impactful results.

To ensure the system’s effectiveness, it will be integrated with widely used platforms like Google News. Moreover, the AI platform will feature real-time alerts and analysis, providing journalists and journalists’ organizations with key insights every hour. This real-world application will demonstrate the platform’s value in the evolving climate narrative and inspire public awareness and dialogue about addressing climate change.

As the Climate Safeguards project continues to grow, we must commit to transparency and accountability in scientific discourse. Validating scientist-generated information is crucial to prevent citizens from playing with data, and this initiative will play a vital role in shaping a future where climate change is understood and acted upon.
