Weekly Wrap: Misinformation On CJP Protests, Assam Floods & More

In an age where our screens are constantly flooded with information, the line between reality and fabrication has become dangerously thin. This week, we saw a particularly unsettling surge in misinformation—ranging from distorted political optics to malicious fabrications aimed at inciting public panic. From manipulated videos intended to sow distrust in our military leadership to staged clips designed to exploit the genuine tragedy of the Assam floods, the digital landscape has been a minefield of deception. By meticulously investigating these claims, we aim to pull back the curtain on the tactics used to mislead you, ensuring that the truth—often quieter than the noise of viral falsehoods—remains at the forefront of the public conversation.

One of the most persistent trends this week involved the political sphere, where even the most mundane interactions were twisted into grand narratives. For instance, a viral video appeared to show JP Nadda staging a theatrical welcome for Prime Minister Modi after allegedly stepping out of the same car. It is a classic example of how out-of-context clips can be weaponized to frame political leaders in a staged, performative light. Through our investigation, we dismantled this narrative, proving that the circumstances were not as they appeared. Such myths thrive because they confirm existing biases, but they ultimately serve to distract from substantive policy discussions by focusing instead on manufactured drama.

Perhaps more alarming was the dangerous disinformation campaign surrounding the recent CJP protests, which had already seen significant developments with the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and the resolution of key demands. Malicious actors, clearly hoping to stir unrest, circulated a doctored video featuring Chief of Defence Staff General NS Raja Subramani. The clip falsely claimed that 30,000 soldiers had resigned in protest—a fabrication designed to strike at the heart of national security and public trust in our armed forces. By spreading such deep-seated lies, the perpetrators weren’t just sharing a mistake; they were actively attempting to compromise the perceived stability of our nation’s defense apparatus.

The manipulation didn’t stop at political or military grandstanding; it extended into the realm of civil unrest and social violence, where footage was frequently recycled to fit new, incendiary contexts. We saw a video circulating that purported to show brutal police crackdowns on CJP protesters following the withdrawal of their demonstrations. Upon closer inspection, it became clear that the footage was repurposed from entirely different, older events. Similarly, a video circulated claiming a Dalit BJP worker was assaulted for the simple act of sitting on a sofa in a party office. By stripping these videos of their original context and re-labeling them, trolls and bad actors seek to manipulate social sensitivities and inflame existing communal or caste-based tensions, proving that old footage is often as dangerous as a newly fabricated lie.

Even more heartbreaking is the exploitation of human suffering for clicks and clout. As Assam grapples with the catastrophic reality of its current floods, the internet became cluttered with misleading content that cheapens the genuine struggle of the victims. We debunked a viral video showing women lying unconscious near a stream, which was being shared as evidence of flood casualties. In reality, the footage was a staged production created purely for entertainment purposes. There is something uniquely predatory about using the imagery of a climate disaster—where real families are losing their homes and livelihoods—to manufacture sensationalist content for social media engagement. It is a grim reminder that when a crisis hits, the first casualty is often the empathy that should be directed toward those truly in need.

Ultimately, navigating the internet today requires a healthy dose of skepticism and a commitment to verifying sources before hitting the “share” button. Misinformation thrives on the speed of reaction, relying on our anger, shock, or sympathy to bypass our critical thinking. Whether it is a fake resignation by a military leader, a repurposed video of a protest, or a staged clip of a humanitarian crisis, these fabrications all share a single goal: to manipulate how you see the world. As we continue to hold these narratives up to the light of scrutiny, we invite you to be the gatekeepers of truth in your own circles. By pausing, checking, and questioning what we see, we can collectively deflate the influence of those who profit from deceit and restore integrity to our digital dialogue.
