Twin Falls shooting survivor’s family warns against misinformation

The quiet community of Twin Falls, Idaho, was shattered this past Saturday by a senseless act of violence outside a local In-N-Out. Among those caught in the crossfire was Terry Dudley, a manager at North Star Taxi who was simply going about his day, charging one of the company’s Tesla vehicles, when the gunfire began. As Terry remains hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds to his back and upper body, his family is struggling to balance the trauma of his recovery with the exhausting, unnecessary burden of fighting back against the tide of digital misinformation that has spiraled out of control in the wake of the tragedy.

The moments following the shooting were described as nothing short of a nightmare. A family friend named Lindsay, who happened to be nearby when the chaos broke out, rushed toward the charging station to help. She found Terry and two other victims in a dire state, trapped in an area where the heat of the pavement and the frantic nature of the scene made providing aid incredibly difficult. With ambulances blocked by the congestion of the crime scene, a compassionate stranger improvised, using a car mat to provide a makeshift cushion for Terry as he fought for consciousness. It was a singular moment of humanity in an otherwise harrowing situation, eventually leading to Terry being stabilized and airlifted to Boise for specialized medical care.

While Terry fights for his life, his son, Michael Dudley, and friends like Lindsay are finding themselves fighting a different battle online. In an era where “breaking news” is often determined by the speed of a social media post rather than the accuracy of a report, the Dudley family has been horrified to discover that some users have already declared Terry dead. Some have even gone as far as to create and circulate fake obituaries. For a family already reeling from the shock of a loved one being shot, seeing these false claims spread across platforms has been a source of immense, unnecessary secondary trauma that compounds the stress of their reality.

This phenomenon of digital recklessness isn’t just affecting the victims; it is actively hindering the justice process and harming innocent bystanders. The Twin Falls Police Department has been forced to publicly debunk viral claims that incorrectly identified a man named Amer Mandzic as the shooter. Mandzic had absolutely nothing to do with the incident, yet he and his family have been subjected to threats, harassment, and intimidation because of online rumors. Authorities have issued a stern warning: those who continue to circulate these falsehoods are not only spreading hurt, but they may also be opening themselves up to criminal charges for the harassment that inevitably follows.

The Dudley family is now pleading with the public to exercise basic human decency by waiting for verified information before sharing content. Michael Dudley’s message to the community is clear and urgent: stop believing everything you see on a screen. The family is currently focused entirely on Terry’s long road to recovery, and the weight of managing his medical expenses—which is being assisted by a GoFundMe set up by his friend and coworker James Palmer—is more than enough for them to carry. They are asking for patience, privacy, and a return to the truth during this period of profound vulnerability.

Ultimately, this tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the responsibility we hold in the digital age. Behind every headline and every grainy photo shared in a social media comment section is a human being like Terry Dudley, whose life was forever altered in an instant. While the investigation into the shooting continues and the names of other victims are slowly coming to light, the community’s best way to support the survivors is to reject the noise of rumor mills and respect the process of the authorities. By choosing empathy over virality, we can ensure that we are offering support to those who need it most, rather than adding to their grief.
