TikTok Takes on Fake News Ahead of Israel’s Election

As Israel approaches its general election on October 27, 2026, the digital landscape has become a primary battleground for information. Recognizing the risks inherent in such a high-stakes environment, TikTok has announced a comprehensive strategy aimed at preserving the integrity of the democratic process. The platform is deploying a specialized Israel Election Taskforce, a multidisciplinary group of experts in cybersecurity and misinformation. By combining advanced automated moderation systems with human oversight and close cooperation with the Central Elections Committee, the company hopes to create a digital space where users can engage with the election without falling victim to manipulative tactics or bad-faith actors.

To ensure voters have access to reliable facts, TikTok is rolling out an in-app Election Centre tailored specifically for the Israeli public. This hub serves as a centralized, trusted source for essential details such as polling locations, voting deadlines, and step-by-step guidance on how to participate. Recognizing that information literacy is the best defense against deception, the hub also provides educational tools to help users distinguish between verified news and misleading claims. By directing users to this resource whenever they interact with election-related content, TikTok is prioritizing transparency and providing a beacon of objective information in an often-cluttered social media feed.

The most pressing challenge in this election cycle is the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence. To combat the spread of hyper-realistic deepfakes and AI-generated misinformation, TikTok has implemented a strict labeling policy. Creators are now mandated to disclose when content is synthesized by AI, a rule supported by sophisticated detection technologies like invisible watermarking and the C2PA content-credential standard. Having already successfully labeled over 3 billion videos worldwide, the platform is putting its global experience to use in Israel. This focus on transparency ensures that viewers can make informed judgments about the legitimacy of the political content appearing on their screens.

While labeling provides transparency, TikTok is taking a zero-tolerance approach toward content that threatens the democratic process. The platform explicitly forbids the spreading of false information regarding voting procedures, election dates, or registration requirements. Furthermore, it is cracking down on impersonation, promptly removing accounts that falsely mimic political figures, established news organizations, or reputable authorities. These policies are bolstered by a strategic partnership with the fact-checking agency Reuters, which helps verify the accuracy of claims spreading across the network and provides the objective basis needed for enforcement decisions.

The scale of TikTok’s moderation efforts is significant, with recent reports indicating that the vast majority of policy-violating content is caught by automated systems before it is even reported by the public. Beyond individual posts, the company is actively investigating “covert influence operations”—coordinated networks of accounts that act in unison to artificially inflate specific narratives or sway public opinion. Having disrupted dozens of such operations globally, TikTok’s cybersecurity teams are treating the Israeli election as a priority. By identifying and dismantling these complex networks, the platform is working to ensure that the public debate remains authentic rather than manufactured by external entities.

Finally, TikTok is maintaining a strict firewall between its commercial platform and political campaigning. By prohibiting political advertising and banning paid creator partnerships for political causes, the company is preventing a “pay-to-play” dynamic that could skew discourse. Government and political entities face unique restrictions, including a ban on monetizing their content, which helps keep the focus on voters rather than commercial interests. As the October election nears, TikTok has committed to ongoing transparency through regular data disclosures, acknowledging that in an era of digital uncertainty, earnining the public’s trust requires a consistent, vigilant, and accountable approach to managing their digital square.
