TikTok launches ‘Footnotes’ fact-checking feature in the US to curb misinformation

TikTok Launches Footnotes: A New Crowd-Sourced Fact-Checking System
TikTok, the social media platform, has taken significant strides in addressing misinformation and providing context in its viral content. In a Bio published on its official website on Wednesday, the company shares that it has launched Footnotes, a new crowdsourced fact-checking system. This initiative aims to combat misinformation and ensure accurate dissemination of information across its platform.

Initially piloted in the United States, Footnotes, in collaboration with other platforms like Meta and X, allows eligible contributors to voice their opinions on videos through contextual notes. These notes enable users to either rate a video on a scale of 1 to 5, providing balanced standards of accountability. The system is designed to help the community when there is inconsistency or uncertainty in the information presented in the videos.

For users in the U.S., the introduction of Footnotes is a milestone in TikTok’s efforts to provide context in the face of viral content. By enabling a more engaged community, Footnotes contributes to a safer and more informed online environment. eligibility criteria for contributing to Footnotes include being over 18 years old, having been on the platform for at least six months, and maintaining a clean record with no recent violations of tutokk’s Community Standards.

According to TikTok, nearly 80,000 U.S. users have now qualified to contribute to Footnotes since the launch in April, highlighting the platform’s growing commitment to deeper engagement with its audience. Contributions are judged by a consensus-driven approach, known as the bridging algorithm, which ties together ratings from people with differing viewpoints. This method aims to reduce the risk of manipulation ofVote counts and ensure a more balanced representation of the content.

The goal of Footnotes is to provide context and address misinformation by promoting informed judgment. It also notes that sometimes, the person posting a video may be trying to mislead. Other times, they may lack complete information, in which case Footnotes can be invaluable in bridging this gap. This feature aligns TikTok with similar initiatives by other platforms, such as X and Meta, which have continued to collaborate with organizations like IFCN-accredited centers worldwide.

As TikTok enters what may become its cultural shift into content moderation and participatory systems, the introduction of Footnotes represents a new direction in addressing misinformation. The platform not only relies on its audience but also on an ever-expanding community of contributors to foster a more engaged and data-driven audience. As the mechanism for fact-checking evolves further, TikTok is poised to play a more prominent role in the fight against misinformation, ensuring that content is both truthful and accurate in the digital age.
