Global Survey Reveals Public Optimism for Innovation, but Misinformation Remains a Key Obstacle

A recent multinational survey commissioned by Philip Morris International (PMI) and conducted by Povaddo across ten countries reveals a strong public belief in the power of innovation to address critical global challenges. A significant majority of respondents (76%) expressed excitement about the opportunities presented by technology, with many believing innovation can revolutionize healthcare through advancements like vaccine development (71%) and affordable access (62%). However, the survey also highlights a pervasive challenge: misinformation. A staggering 80% of respondents cited misinformation as a major barrier to progress, fueling polarized debates and hindering the adoption of potentially beneficial innovations.

Public Divided on Innovation’s Impact on Smoking Rates, Underscoring the Complexity of the Issue

While the survey showcased widespread optimism regarding innovation’s potential in areas like healthcare, opinions were more divided on its capacity to address smoking rates. Only 49% of respondents believed innovation could effectively reduce smoking, reflecting the deeply ingrained societal perceptions and complexities surrounding this issue. This finding underscores the need for clear, evidence-based communication to address public concerns and foster a greater understanding of the role innovation can play in tobacco harm reduction. The survey also revealed concern over the rapid pace of technological change, with 64% of respondents expressing anxiety about society’s ability to adapt.

Citizens Call for Government Action to Combat Misinformation and Foster Responsible Innovation

The survey results strongly emphasize the public’s desire for government intervention to navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by innovation. An overwhelming 90% of respondents stressed the importance of government action in ensuring public access to accurate information and establishing clear regulations. This call for transparency and accountability reflects a growing awareness of the crucial role governments play in fostering a responsible and ethical innovation ecosystem. Furthermore, 87% of respondents urged governments to actively combat misinformation, highlighting the urgent need to address this pervasive threat to progress.

PMI CEO Emphasizes the Importance of Science-Based Decision-Making in Evaluating Innovations

Commenting on the survey findings, PMI CEO Jacek Olczak stressed the vital role of science-based decision-making in assessing the potential of innovations, particularly in the context of tobacco harm reduction. He pointed to the success of smoke-free alternatives in countries like Sweden and Japan as evidence of innovation’s potential to positively impact public health. Olczak highlighted the need to move beyond outdated assumptions and embrace evidence-based approaches to evaluate new technologies, advocating for a balanced public discourse grounded in scientific fact rather than misinformation.

Collaboration and Open Dialogue Key to Unlocking the Full Potential of Innovation

The survey results underscore the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors, with 83% of respondents supporting such partnerships. This collaborative approach is crucial for navigating the complex landscape of innovation, ensuring that new technologies are developed and implemented responsibly and ethically. The survey also highlights the need for open and balanced public debate (supported by 82% of respondents) to foster a greater understanding of the opportunities and challenges presented by innovation.

PMI’s Commitment to a Smoke-Free Future and Expanding into Wellness and Healthcare

PMI’s commissioning of this survey aligns with its stated commitment to a smoke-free future and its broader ambition to expand into wellness and healthcare. The company has invested heavily in the development and scientific substantiation of smoke-free alternatives to cigarettes, aiming to provide adult smokers with less harmful options. The survey results provide valuable insights into public perceptions of innovation, informing PMI’s ongoing efforts to address global health challenges through technological advancements and evidence-based solutions. The company’s commitment to transparency and dialogue is further evidenced by the publication of the "Innovation Under Pressure" white paper, which provides a comprehensive analysis of the current innovation landscape and calls for collaborative action to unlock its full potential.
