Chennai Police Rebut Misinformation in Anna University Sexual Assault Case, Emphasize Investigative Integrity

Chennai, Tamil Nadu – January 4, 2025 – The Tamil Nadu Police Department issued a stern statement today, refuting widespread misinformation circulating on social media and local news channels concerning the ongoing investigation into the sexual assault of a student at Anna University on December 23, 2024. The police unequivocally denied reports suggesting specific individuals had been implicated by the victim, the seizure of electronic devices containing illicit content, and the identification of additional suspects from Tiruppur. The statement emphasized that these claims are entirely unfounded and lack any basis in fact.

The police clarified that neither the Special Investigation Team (SIT), an all-women team of IPS officers leading the investigation, nor any other authorized entity has released any information regarding the progress of the case. They expressed deep concern over the dissemination of unsubstantiated and speculative narratives, highlighting the potential to jeopardize the integrity of the investigation. The police warned that such misinformation could prejudice the impartial handling of this sensitive case and inflict significant harm on all parties involved. They urged media outlets, individuals, and social media influencers to exercise restraint and refrain from speculating about the investigation’s outcome or commenting on its details.

The police underscored their commitment to conducting a thorough and unbiased investigation, prioritizing the well-being and privacy of the victim. They emphasized the need for responsible reporting and public discourse, urging everyone to rely solely on official statements from the authorized investigative bodies for accurate information. This measured approach, they reiterated, is crucial for ensuring a fair and just outcome in this sensitive case.

The incident, which occurred on December 23, 2024, involved the brutal assault of a 19-year-old engineering student and her male companion on the Anna University campus. According to the victim’s complaint, the assailant violently attacked her friend before dragging her into nearby bushes and sexually assaulting her. The perpetrator also recorded the assault and subsequently used the video to blackmail the victim. This harrowing incident has sparked widespread outrage and demands for justice across Tamil Nadu.

Police have arrested 37-year-old Gnanasekaran, a roadside vendor with a documented criminal history, in connection with the assault. The arrest has brought some measure of relief, but public anger remains palpable, fueled by concerns about campus safety and the handling of the investigation. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has criticized the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government, alleging inaction and demanding swift justice for the student. The BJP claims that several members of its Mahila Morcha (women’s wing) were detained or placed under house arrest while attempting to organize a rally from Madurai to Chennai to protest the incident and demand action.

This incident has brought the issue of women’s safety in Tamil Nadu into sharp focus, prompting calls for enhanced security measures on university campuses and stronger legal action against perpetrators of sexual violence. The police have reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens and appealed for public cooperation in maintaining the integrity of the ongoing investigation. They have pledged to bring the perpetrator to justice and ensure that the victim receives the necessary support and protection. The investigation continues, and further updates will be released through official channels as they become available.
