In our digital age, TikTok has become a primary clearinghouse for health advice, often eclipsing traditional medical sources. However, a recent study published in PLOS Digital Health reveals a troubling dynamic within this viral ecosystem: while the vast majority of sunscreen-related content is positive, the small fraction of videos featuring medical misinformation tends to explode in popularity. Researchers from the University of Alberta analyzed nearly 1,000 top-performing videos under hashtags like #spf and #sunscreen. They discovered that while most creators are encouraging the use of SPF, the algorithms seem to have a dangerous preference for “contrarian” content, rewarding fear-mongering about the supposed toxicity of sunscreens with significantly higher engagement rates than factual, pro-health advice.

The paradox here lies in human psychology and platform incentives. The study found that while only 6% of the analyzed content contained misinformation—such as claims that sunscreen blocks essential vitamin D or is inherently carcinogenic—these videos received outsized attention in the form of likes, comments, and shares. This suggests that alarmist claims about “toxic chemicals” cut through the noise of the internet much more effectively than dry, evidence-backed advice. Because TikTok’s algorithm prioritizes high-engagement content, these misleading videos are disproportionately amplified, reaching large audiences who may walk away with the false impression that avoiding sunscreen is a valid or “enlightened” health choice.

Perhaps even more concerning is the nature of the “correct” information that does circulate. The researchers noted that of the 86.8% of videos that promote sunscreen usage, the vast majority focus almost exclusively on skin aesthetics—how the product affects makeup application, the “glow” it provides, or the texture of the lotion. Only a tiny fraction of these promotional videos, just 6%, actually mention cancer prevention as the primary reason for wearing it. In effect, sunscreen is being rebranded as a beauty accessory rather than a life-saving medical tool. By stripping away the health context, even well-meaning beauty influencers are inadvertently failing to emphasize the very reason sunscreen is considered a global health necessity.

This shift in messaging creates a “missed opportunity” for public health. When society stops viewing sun protection as a defense against a rising global tide of skin cancer and starts viewing it merely as a step in a skincare routine, the motivation to use it consistently wanes. If a user primarily uses sunscreen because it makes their primer sit better, they are far more likely to stop applying it if a viral video claims that the product is “toxic.” Had the health benefits been more firmly established in the public consciousness through these platforms, users might be more skeptical of such baseless fear-mongering.

The authors of the study—Alessandro Marcon, Marco Zenone, and their team—are careful to note that TikTok is not entirely overrun with misinformation. The platform is not a digital wasteland of bad health advice, but it is a landscape where “shock value” holds immense currency. The danger is not that everyone is lying, but that the truth is being drowned out by the amplification of dramatic, health-harming myths. This trend represents a broader struggle between the slow, steady facts of medical science and the rapid, viral spread of inflammatory content that exploits human anxiety for engagement.

As we navigate a world where a 30-second video can carry more weight than a dermatologist’s recommendation, we must strive to become more discerning viewers.
